Using the Polyjuice Potion to disguise himself as Alastor Moody, Barty Crouch Jr. was the one who entered Harry in the tournament. The movie made it appear that Igor Karkaroff was guilty, but the movies aren't to be trusted. He actually fled when his Mark burned, and is presumed dead.

Hedwig shows up during their History of Magic lesson, and Harry wonders why she didn't arrive with the rest of the owls during the morning mail. He then notices that she is injured, and rushes to Professor Grubbly-Plank for help. Hedwig has been attacked, and Harry's letter has been intercepted.

Harry doesn't want anything to do with Kreacher, since the elf was part of the reason Sirius died. When Harry went to check if Sirius was home after having a vision of his torture, Kreacher told him that Sirius was gone and would not be coming back. This led Harry to rush off to the Ministry, a task which ultimately ended with Sirius' death.

In the chapter "The Seer Overheard", Professor Trelawney reveals Snape's guilt. She and Harry had been walking to Dumbledore's office together, but this new information enrages and distracts Harry. He tells her to stay there as he charges into Dumbledore's office, only to be momentarily sidetracked by Dumbledore's discovery of a Horcrux's location.
