Dr Jem really is a gem, but his true name is James Russell. He is introduced in the first book of the series, 'The School at the Chalet'.

Answer: William and Gilbert

'EBDisms', as they are fondly known to fans, occur throughout the series. Names, ages and even family members appear to change randomly.

Answer: Madge Bettany

Dr Jem marries Madge, the first head of the Chalet School. They are very happy together.
4. How many children does Dr Jem have?

Answer: Six

Dr Jem has six children with Madge. These are David, Sybil, Josette, Ailie, Kevin and Kester.
5. Which unexplained skill does Dr Jem have, introduced in 'The Chalet School in Exile'?

Answer: He can speak Afrikaans

In 'Exile' Dr Jem says that he and Mr Flower were speaking Afrikaans. It is never explained how he learnt the language.

Dr Jem helped to save Madge from a burning train. He later helped her deal with many mishaps, usually caused by her sister Joey.
