Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many other rabbits did Peter live with?

Answer: Four

Peter Rabbit lived with his mother and his three sisters, Flopsy, Mopsy and Cottontail. Their home was in a sandy bank below the roots of a fir tree. Although Peter's father had been killed before this story started, the illustrations in the book show that Mrs Rabbit was able to dress her children in nice clothes.
2. What did Mrs Rabbit buy at the baker's?

Answer: Bread and currant buns

Mrs Rabbit, Peter's mother, told her children to be good while she was away then she went out to the baker's, carrying her umbrella and a basket to put her purchases in. She bought a loaf of brown bread and five currant buns for her family.
3. What had Peter's mother forbidden her children to do?

Answer: Go to a particular place

Old Mrs Rabbit told her children not to go into the garden of Mr McGregor because that was where their father was killed. He had been caught and then Mrs McGregor had baked him in a pie. His sisters obeyed their mother but Peter was a bad young rabbit and went to this garden at once and started eating Mr McGregor's vegetables.
4. When Peter first saw him, what was Mr McGregor doing?

Answer: Planting out young cabbages

Feeling sick after eating too many of Mr McGregor's vegetables, Peter went looking for some parsley but, when he passed a cucumber frame, he saw Mr McGregor. The human was kneeling down and planting out some cabbages; when he saw Peter he took hold of a rake and tried to catch the young rabbit.
5. What caused Peter's shoes to come off?

Answer: He was running very fast

With Mr McGregor chasing him, Peter ran round the garden as fast as he could to escape and his shoes fell off. One shoe was lost in the cabbage patch and the other among the growing potatoes. Then Peter's jacket got caught in some netting and he only just escaped being captured by Mr McGregor by squirming out of the jacket and leaving it behind as he ran away.
6. How did Peter escape from the toolshed?

Answer: Jumped through a window

Peter tried to hide in a watering can in the toolshed but he sneezed while he was in it and Mr McGregor heard and tried to step on him. Peter got away by jumping through the toolshed's window and knocked three plants down in doing so. By then Mr McGregor was tired of chasing Peter, so went back to gardening.
7. Who was asked to tell Peter the way to the exit gate?

Answer: A mouse

Looking for a way out of the garden Peter only found a wall with a locked door which he could not get through. He asked a mouse who was going in and out under the door to tell him the way to the garden gate but she had her mouth full with a pea she was taking outside to feed her family. She was unable to say anything and could only shake her head at him.
8. Which animal was sitting and watching goldfish?

Answer: A white cat

Peter was not quite sure where he was as he tried to make his way out of the garden. Then he arrived at a pond and saw a white cat sitting beside it and just staring at the goldfish it contained while twitching the end of her tail. His cousin, Benjamin Bunny, had taught Peter to be wary of cats, so Peter crept away very quietly.
9. How was Peter able to get past Mr McGregor?

Answer: Ran past him behind his back

After hearing Mr McGregor at work, Peter managed to climb onto a wheelbarrow and look over the garden. He noticed that Mr McGregor was between him and the garden gate, but that the human was hoeing onions with his back to where Peter was. Taking his chance, Peter ran behind some blackcurrant bushes past Mr McGregor to the gate and squeezed underneath it to safety.
10. What happened when the tired Peter got back home?

Answer: He lay down on the floor and closed his eyes

Peter ran all the way home and was very tired when he got there. He lay down on the soft sandy floor and closed his eyes. Later on that evening he did not feel well so his mother put him into bed and then gave him a tablespoonful of camomile tea as medicine. In contrast, his well-behaved sisters had a nice supper of blackberries with bread and milk.
