Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the name of Squirrel Nutkin's brother?

Answer: Twinkleberry

Nutkin was a small red squirrel, who had a brother called Twinkleberry. He also had many cousins and they all lived in a wood near a lake. The lake had an island in it.
2. Why did the squirrels go to the island?

Answer: To collect nuts

In the autumn the squirrels crossed the lake to the island to collect ripe nuts. They used their tails as sails as they paddled their small rafts made of twigs across the lake.
3. Whereabouts on the island did the owl, Mr Brown, live?

Answer: In a tree

The owl was old, and was sometimes called 'Old Brown' and 'Old Mr Brown'. He lived in a hollow oak-tree on the island, and the squirrels always spoke to him before they started gathering nuts from other trees there.
4. On the first day, what did the squirrels bring for the owl?

Answer: Three mice

As a present the squirrels gave the mice to Mr Brown, the owl, for him to eat. Practically all of them asked the owl's permission to gather nuts in a very polite way.
5. How did Nutkin act towards Mr Brown to start with?

Answer: Was very rude

Nutkin was not polite like all the other squirrels but jumped up and down and asked the owl, Mr Brown, an old riddle. The owl went to sleep while the squirrels gathered nuts and took them back home.
6. What happened the second time they went to the island?

Answer: Nutkin tickled Mr Brown

The other squirrels brought another present of food for Mr Brown the next day and were very polite to him again. However, Nutkin merely asked another riddle and tickled Mr Brown with a nettle. He then played marbles while the other squirrels collected nuts.
7. How did Mr Brown react to the squirrels?

Answer: Did not speak to them

The owl, Mr Brown, did not speak to any of the squirrels, and usually just sat still without seeming to notice them. Sometimes the owl then went to sleep, and sometimes he cooked and ate the food that they had brought for him.
8. How many times did the squirrels go to gather nuts?

Answer: Six

The squirrels sailed over to the island to gather nuts every day for six days. Each time the others brought presents and were polite to Old Mr Brown and each time Nutkin brought nothing and was rude and often lazy.
9. When Nutkin jumped on the owl, where did he end up?

Answer: In the owl's pocket

On the last day Nutkin jumped onto the owl's head and there was a scuffle between them. When it finished the other rabbits saw the old owl, Mr Brown, apparently asleep while Nutkin was trapped in the pocket of his waistcoat.
10. Why was Nutkin able to escape when Mr Brown, the owl, held him by the tail?

Answer: Pulled until the tail broke

Mr Brown held Nutkin up by the tail to skin then eat him, but the squirrel pulled so hard that his tail broke in two, so he was able to run away and go home. After this adventure he was quite aggressive to anyone who asked him a riddle.
