Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is Captain Haddock's favourite expression?

Answer: "Blistering Barnacles!"

Tintin's favorite expression was "Great Snakes." The millionaire in "Flight 714" said "Stocks and Shares". And "Diavolo" was often said by the gangster, drug-smuggler, gun-runner, slave-trader, kidnapper and all-round cad Rastapopulous (I can't use stronger language than "cad" on a family quiz site).
2. In which of the following stories does the wonderdog Snowy appear?

Answer: All of These

I thought I should include a question about the lovable canine.
3. When our heroes were on the first rocket bound for the moon, which new character turned to be a traitor?

Answer: Frank Wolff

All these new characters were employees of the Syldavian atomic research centre where the rockets were built. Muller was head of the baddies who were spying on them.
I must admit I've never forgotten Frank's noble self-sacrifice - he left the rocket (without a spacesuit) when the oxygen was running out and they couldn't make it back to earth in time because he felt so guilty about betraying them. Captain Haddock wouldn't let anyone speak ill of him after that.
4. Who had an ancestor who captained the ship "Unicorn" and single-handedly blew up his ship after pirates had taken over it?

Answer: Captain Haddock

What an ancestor! He was so much like our hero that you could not tell them apart. I was cheering when he slew Red Rackham and took on those pirates all by himself. The wooden idol of the great man still stands in our heroes' Maritime Gallery.
5. Who were the gangsters who searched for the treasure of the pirates in "The Secret of the Unicorn"?

Answer: The Bird Brothers

It was incredibly ironic the lengths they took to find the parchments: stealing Tintin's model ship, chloroforming Mr. Sakharine, kidnapping Tintin. And all the time the treasure was in their own basement!
6. What was the very first Tintin story?

Answer: Tintin In The Land of The Soviets

I've got a black-and-white edition of "Soviets". I think it was not very popular because Herge had not properly researched the USSR back then and there was an angry outcry from Lenin & Co. The edition was thus not redone in colour like "Congo" was.
7. Who is the real-life gangster whom Tintin meets in "Tintin In America" who nearly kills Tintin?

Answer: Al Capone

Nowadays whenever I read "Tintin In America" I imagine Capone speaking with Robert De Niro's voice, from the movie "The Untouchables".
8. Who is the annoying insurance salesman who invites himself into people's homes (even when they're not home) and who has an Uncle Anatole who thought he was just as funny?

Answer: Jolyon Wagg

I think Wagg was originally supposed to only feature in "The Calculus Affair" but then Herge realised how such a funny, annoying and pompous man (not to mention eerily realistic!) would amuse readers in future.
9. In which story was Professor Calculus kidnapped by two rival gangs of Balkan nationalists?

Answer: The Calculus Affair

He was in fact kidnapped in the Crytal Balls/Prisoners story as well, but by Incas not Syldavians or Bordurians. I guess that'll teach him not to wear South American bracelets in the future!
10. What was the last Tintin book ever published? (NOTE: I'm not asking about "The Lake of Sharks" or any other movies, or compliations, or biographies about the author, just the adventures themselves.)

Answer: Tintin and the Picaros

As our heroes say as they fly back to their homeland:
Captain: Blistering Barnacles! I shan't be sorry to be home.
Tintin: Me too.
Calculus: Me too. But with a little mustard, if you please.
