Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the largest member of the deer family?

Answer: Moose

The moose is a very large animal. A typical moose stands 1.4-2.1 m (4.6-6.9 ft) high at the shoulder. The bulls, or males, are heavier than the females. The moose is the only member of the deer family that does not live in herds or groups (with the exception of a young mother who will stay with her calves for about 18 months).
2. How do you spell the green part of a deciduous tree?

Answer: Leaf

A leaf is an above-ground part of a plant, including trees. The main purpose of the leaf is photosynthesis and the exchange of gases. There are big and small leaves. The biggest undivided leaf is that of a giant edible arum that lives in the rain forest of Borneo. One of its leaves can be ten feet across and have a surface area of over 30 square feet (approximately 2.8 sq. metres)!
3. How many legs do insects have?

Answer: 6

All insects have six legs. Arachnids (this includes spiders) have eight. Many animals have four legs. Humans, apes and birds have two legs.
4. What do you call a smaller river that flows into a larger one?

Answer: A tributary

A tributary is a natural river or stream that flows into a larger one. For example, the Missouri River is a tributary of the Mississippi River because it flows into the Mississippi.
5. What is a popular sport on frozen ponds in winters in Canada?

Answer: Pond hockey

Of the four options, only hockey is the real winter sport. It is very similar to traditional ice hockey, but is played on ice rinks that form in cold weather on lakes and ponds. Pond hockey rinks are usually smaller than ice hockey rinks in arenas. There is actually a World Pond Hockey Championship that is played each year.
6. What is "jerky"?

Answer: Meat that is seasoned and dried for easy storage

Lean meat is cut into thin strips, then seasoned with salt and dried to make jerky. A variety of meat can be used including beef, turkey, chicken, and salmon. The indigenous people of the Andes, the Quechuan people, use the word "ch'arki" which means "dried, salted meat". It is thought that this is the origin of the word "jerky".
7. What type of shark has a head with a distinctive shape unlike any other shark?

Answer: Hammerhead

A hammerhead shark is named because of its hammer-shaped head. There are actually a number of different types of hammerhead sharks, but all have this odd-shaped head. All seem to prefer warmer water near coastlines. Hammerhead sharks also seem to swim in schools during the day and become solitary hunters at night. This is unlike most other sharks that remain solitary day and night.
8. What are clouds made of?

Answer: Water and dust

Water vapour forms near the ground. This is an invisible gas that rises when it is warm. When warm air rises, it expands and cools. When this happens, the water particles in the vapour attach to small particles of dust that are high in our atmosphere. When billions of these droplets come together they become a cloud that we can see on the ground.
9. If you have a "northeast" wind blowing, which direction is it coming from and where is it heading?

Answer: Northeast to southwest

Meteorologists use the place where the wind seems to originate as the direction. So a northeasterly wind blows from the northeast towards the southwest, a northwest wind blows from the northwest towards the southeast, and so on. As an example, a helium balloon released in a northeast wind will travel toward the southwest.
10. What is a cobblestone road?

Answer: A man-made hard surface for foot or vehicle travel

A cobblestone road is one that is made by humans. Stones are set in sand or gravel and lined up tight enough to form a hard surface. Sometimes, the stones are set together with mortar. Although not a common method of road construction now, examples still exist in older cities in Europe and North America.

These cobblestone roads seem to last many years longer than roads constructed now, but they have a few disadvantages. They take much longer to make, and they can be quite bumpy for modern vehicles.
