Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What type of ball is used in Australian Rules?

Answer: Similar to a rugby ball, slightly smaller and more rounded at the ends

Until 1879 Australian Rules football was played with an English-made rugby ball. One day Thomas Sherrin, a saddler, made an oval shaped ball with rounder points. Players liked this ball and it was soon adopted by the whole competition.
2. In the AFL, what colour are the balls that are used for day matches?

Answer: Red

The balls are red for day matches and yellow for night matches.
3. Why is the ball sometimes called a "Sherrin"?

Answer: It has the word "Sherrin" (the name of the maker) printed on it

Thomas William Sherrin was born in Melbourne in 1857. He made the first ball designed specifically for the sport. The Sherrin ball has been endorsed by the VFL and AFL since its inception.
4. How many points are scored when a goal is kicked in Aussie Rules football?

Answer: Six

A goal is worth six points. This is when the ball is kicked between the two tall upright posts. A behind is worth one point. The winner of the game is the team whose points score is the highest.
5. Since the Australian Football League commenced in 1897 as the Victorian Football League, only one club has completely left the competition. The name of the club was the Melbourne University Football Club.

Answer: True

It last competed in 1914, and withdrew because it was a strictly amateur club. Player payments were becoming common and University was unable to remain competitive. The club still competes in the Victorian Amateur Football Association.
6. How many players are on the field for each team during play?

Answer: Eighteen

Although the players are not restricted to any one area on the field, there are three backmen, three halfbacks, three across the centre, three half forwards, three forwards, and three on-ballers.
7. What general shape is an Aussie Rules playing field?

Answer: An oval

The playing field is typically a large oval-shaped grass surface. Grounds have no fixed dimensions. They can vary from long and narrow to almost circular, and are not necessarily symmetrical, depending upon how and where the field was constructed.
8. In which year did the Victorian Football League change its name to the Australian Football League?

Answer: 1990

The Victorian Football League began in 1897 as a breakaway from the Victorian Football Association. Only teams based in the Australian state of Victoria played in this league. The name was changed to the Australian Football League for the 1990 season onwards, after expanding to other states throughout the 1980s.
9. What is the name of the prize for the fairest and best player in the AFL?

Answer: Charles Brownlow Trophy

The Charles Brownlow Trophy, better known as the Brownlow Medal, was first awarded by the VFL in 1924. The Magarey Medal is awarded in South Australia. The Sandover Medal is awarded in Western Australia. The Nichols Medal is awarded in the Northern Territory.
10. How many times was there a drawn grand final game in the VFL?

Answer: Two

In 1948, Melbourne and Essendon drew. The replay was won by Melbourne. In 1977, North Melbourne and Collingwood drew. The replay was won by North Melbourne.
The third grand final draw occurred in 2010, after the VFL became the AFL, when Collingwood and St. Kilda played a draw. Collingwood were victorious the following week.
