Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Blocking is illegal.

Answer: False

Blocking is legal. Blocking is when players at the net jump up to block the other team's spike. Blocking doesn't count as a hit.
2. What happens when a ball lands on the line in volleyball?

Answer: It is considered "in"

When a volleyball lands on the line, it is always considered in. Since the ref cannot look at everything all at once, they have people who look at the lines to see where the volleyball landed.
3. When was volleyball introduced in the Summer Olympics as an official sport?

Answer: 1964

Volleyball has been part of the Summer Olympics since 1964 and has two events; women and men.
4. What does it mean if the ref holds up four fingers?

Answer: There were four hits

The ref stands on a big platform. They send "signals" to the players with their arms and fingers. When a ref holds up four fingers it means that a team hit the ball four times. This is illegal, and gives the opposing team a point.
5. What is a foot fault?

Answer: When the server steps over the line

On a volleyball court, there are lines to tell you what is in and what is out. When someone is serving, they have to step outside of the line. Their foot can't go on or over the line until they have finished serving the ball.
6. If your team's serve doesn't go over the net, your teammates can help the ball over the net by setting it over.

Answer: False

Your teammates can't help the ball get over the net if your serve doesn't make it. The other team gets the point if it doesn't make it over the net or if it DOES make it over the net but your team helped it.
7. What is the name of the player in the back row that digs the spikes from the opposing team?

Answer: Libero

A libero helps with the really hard hits from the other team. Your libero wears a different jersey than everybody else and is specialized at getting down low and digging the ball when the rest of the team can't.
8. If a serve hits the net, whether it goes over or not, it is automatically the other team's point.

Answer: False

If the ball doesn't go over the net it is the other team's point ... BUT your serve is allowed to hit the net and still be in play, it just has to go over!
9. How many points do you have to win by to win a game?

Answer: 2

You have to be in the lead by two points in order to win a game. If you are at 25 and the other team is at 24, you still haven't won even though you are at the winning number of points. If you win the next point, making the scoring 26 to 24, THEN you have won!
10. How many times is a player allowed to hit the volleyball in a row?

Answer: 1

A player is only allowed to hit the ball once. If you hit the ball to a teammate, then the teammate hits the ball back to you, you are allowed to legally hit it because it wasn't twice in a row.
