1. Which country is long and skinny and is one of the only two South American countries NOT to border Brazil?

Answer: Chile

Chile borders Peru, Bolivia and Argentina and the Pacific Ocean. It is very narrow, being only 350 kms wide at its widest point. Chile also governs Easter Island, home to the giant stone heads.

Colombia is in the north of the continent, and borders Panama. Cameroon is in Africa and Czech Republic (also known as Czechia) is right in the middle of Europe.

Answer: Poland

German troops crossed the border in the early morning of September 1, 1939. Two days later, Great Britain (and the rest of the British Commonwealth), and France declared war on Germany. Germany invaded Belgium, Netherlands and France in May 1940, and before long most of the countries in the world were involved. The war did not finish until Sept 2, 1945.
3. Which of these countries is just north of the Equator, and just south of Malaysia?

Answer: Singapore

Singapore is an island nation, and the first European contact was when Stamford Raffles was granted the permission to open a trading centre, in 1819. It was part of Malaya and Malaysia, before declaring itself independent in 1965. The Singapore Zoo is one of the world's best, and the Singapore Flyer is an amazingly large Ferris wheel, giving a great view over Singapore Harbour. The Marina Bay Hotel is quite unique, comprising three towers topped by a huge boat!
4. Which island is due south of the American state of Florida? Its official language is Spanish and Christopher Columbus was the first European to land there.

Answer: Cuba

A rebellion in 1959 saw Fidel Castro come to power. At first he was supported by the US government, but when he turned the country into a Communist state, that support was quickly withdrawn and trade between the two countries was stopped. Trade was slowly reopened in 2015.

Italy has a long and interesting history, dating back to before the Roman Empire, with the Etruscans occupying the areas of present-day Rome from before 800 BC. According to legend, the city of Rome was founded by twin brothers Romulus and Remus in 750 BC. Over the centuries, parts of the country has been occupied by Greeks, Celts, Lombards, Ostrogoths, Normans, Byzantines, on top of constant struggles between the various city-states.

The present-day Italy was not a country until 1871, when Giuseppe Garibaldi led the struggle for unification.
6. Which one of these 'G' countries has the most land borders?

Answer: Germany

Germany borders nine other countries - Denmark, Poland, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Austria, France, Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands.

Greece borders Albania, Bulgaria, Turkey, Republic of Macedonia. Guatemala is in Central America and has borders with Mexico, Belize, Honduras and El Salvador. The west African country of Ghana only has frontiers with three countries - Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, and Togo.
7. There are only two countries starting with the letter 'Z', and they border each other! Which continent are they on?

Answer: Africa

Zimbabwe and Zambia are both in southern Africa and are separated by the Zambesi River (another 'Z' name!) This river is the site of the world-famous Victoria Falls, known locally as 'the smoke that thunders'.

Zimbabwe was known as Southern Rhodesia until 1980, and Zambia was previously named Northern Rhodesia, changing its name in 1964.
8. Which landlocked country was the setting of the classic movie 'The Sound of Music'?

Answer: Austria

A landlocked country is one that does not border an ocean or major sea, and there over 40 of them around the world. One of these is Austria, which has a long border with both Germany and Italy. Its capital, Vienna, is a beautiful city, and was home to several classical composers, including Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Franz Schubert, and Johann Strauss (Senior AND Junior).

Andorra is a small country sandwiched between Spain and France and Albania is not landlocked- it has a coastline on the Mediterranean Sea. Armenia is landlocked but is in Asia.
9. Which Middle Eastern country used to be known as Persia?

Answer: Iran

Another country with a very long history, with the ancient kingdom of Elam dating back over 6,000 years! More recently, Persia had many battles with the Greeks, including the Persian Wars that lasted for fifty years in the 5th century BC.

Historically, the country has been known as Persia since antiquity, and did not become commonly known as Iran till 1935.

In 2020, Iran had a population of over 80 million people.
10. Which European country has a capital that shares its name with a vegetable that some kids do not like to eat?

Answer: Belgium

Belgium was a part of the Netherlands, until it seceded in 1830. It is bordered by France, Germany, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. It was one of the first twelve countries to adopt the common currency, the Euro.

Brussels sprouts have been grown in Belgium for centuries, and took their name from the capital, Brussels. They look like little cabbages and are very good for you, which probably explains why kids do not like them! I like them steamed or boiled with a nob of butter and some pepper.
