Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. We all call our dogs special names, but do you know what the scientific name for the domestic dog is?

Answer: Canis lupus familiaris

Dogs are a member of the species C. lupis (commonly called the grey wolf).

The family Canidae includes wolves, foxes and the coyote. Because of their close genetic relationship with wolves, coyotes and jackals, domestic dogs can interbreed with any of these species to produce fertile offspring.

Dogs were the first animal to be domesticated by early humans, somewhere between 10,000 and 14,000 years ago. There are a number of theories as to how early dogs were domesticated and yet, after thousands of years of domestication dogs continue to exhibit the keen sense of smell, hearing and vision of their wolf ancestor and retain some level of hunting prey.
2. Most dogs love to kick up their heels and run, but do you know which dog is the fastest?

Answer: Greyhound

Greyhounds are the fastest dogs on Earth and can run at speeds of up to 72.4 km/h (45 mph).
3. Dogs come in all shapes and sizes - very large, large, medium, small and extra small. What is generally referred to as the smallest dog breed in the world?

Answer: Chihuahua

The Chihuahua is the world's smallest dog. This small breed has a long life expectancy well into the mid-teens.. The tiny Chihuahua can weigh from 2 to 6 pounds (900 grams to 2.7 kilograms) and can have a smooth coat or a long coat with feathered ears, neck, feet, legs and tail.

The Chihuahua is graceful, lively, curious, intelligent, loyal and affectionate but has some terrier-like qualities.

Answer: On its paw pads

5. Human eyelids serve several different purposes. How many eyelids does a dog have (on each eye)?

Answer: Three

Each eye of a dog has three eyelids, the main upper and lower lids and a third lid hidden between them in the inner corner of the eye. The third eyelid can sweep across the transparent cornea of the eye and clean it like a windshield wiper and it helps protect the eye from dirt and dust It is also called a "haw".
6. Adult Dalmatians are white with black or brown spots. But what colour are they when born?

Answer: White

The Dalmatian is noted for its unique black or brown spotted coat However, Dalmatian puppies are born with a plain white coat, and their first spots usually appear within a week after birth. After about a month the Dalmatian has most of its spots although they continue to develop throughout life at a much slower rate. The spots are most commonly black or brown on a white background.
7. According to most sources, which two breeds of dog are commonly reputed to be the smartest?

Answer: Border Collie and Standard Poodle

The border collie is happiest in life when they have a job to do. Border collies should definitely not be left at home alone all day, and if they are, they can become quite destructive. They need constant companionship, praise, and extensive exercise.

The standard poodle is highly intelligent and one of the easiest breeds to train. They love to be around people, and really hate to be left alone.
8. The gestation period of all creatures is different, from the short term for mice to the long term for an elephant. What is the gestation period for a dog?

Answer: 60 to 64 days

9. An adult human has 206 bones but, not counting those it may have buried in the garden, how many bones does a dog have?

Answer: 319 to 321 bones

Because of the differing lengths of dogs' tails, they have an average of 319 to 321 bones, which is about 115 more than humans have. Long tails contain more bones than shorter tails.
10. A mouse has 16 teeth. An adult human has 32 teeth. How many teeth does an adult dog have?

Answer: 42

At 4-8 weeks of age, a puppy's mouth will get 28 baby teeth; at 4-7 months of age, the baby teeth fall out and are replaced with 42 permanent adult teeth. They have six pairs of sharp incisor teeth in the front of the mouth which are flanked by two pairs of large canine teeth. The other teeth are premolars and molars.

The mammal with the most teeth is the dolphin with a differing number according to the different species of dolphin. The long-snouted spinner dolphin can have as many as 252 teeth in its long thin jaws.
