Cats and Dogs for Kids Trivia Questions

1. "Oh, what is the matter with poor Puggy-Wug?" Puggy-Wug refers to a real pug that belonged to Winston Churchill's daughter. What kind of dog is a pug?

From Quiz
What Is the Matter with Poor Puggy-Wug?

Answer: a "toy" breed with a short snout

A pug is a toy breed, which means it is very small, about 10-12 inches high, and weighs 14-18 pounds. A pug has a curly tail, a wrinkly face, and a short snout, too. It is very important to clean the folds in a pug's ears and face. Pugs came from China originally, but they became very popular among the kings and queens of Europe, especially Queen Victoria. Mary Churchill owned a pug named Punch, nicknamed Puggy-Wug in the poem. Winston Churchill wrote the poem as a song on the spot one day when Punch was gravely ill. Not knowing what else to do, he sang the song with his daughters Mary and Sarah over and over again. And Punch got better! Sometimes love is the best cure.

7. When choosing a Jack Russell puppy, what is the LEAST important thing to consider?

From Quiz Owning a Jack Russell

Answer: If it matches the lead you just bought

If you have children you should be aware that a Jack Russell will not tolerate ear-pulling, or anything that may hurt it. Some breeders won't sell to a household with a child under a specific age. Also, you should choose a puppy which does not try to back away from you - an ideal puppy should be friendly, outgoing and healthy.

From Quiz For Dog Lovers

Boxers are in K9 police service and can be used as guard dogs, but are also a loyal family pet. The dogs were likely bred from an older breed, Boxl, where they got their name.

13. Normally, kittens don't go to new homes until we are about eight weeks old, but since I was weaned early, I could go live with my new owner when I was seven weeks old. What does weaned actually mean?

From Quiz Panda's Quiz

Answer: To no longer drink milk from the mother cat

As a kitten, I begin to grow. My mother cat gradually stopped letting me drink her milk. This process usually starts when kittens are around four weeks old. It can take a while and is normally complete between the kitten's eighth to tenth week. Moistened kitten food is good for a kitten and helps make the weaning process comfortable. If a kitten is very young, you may need to visit your veterinarian to get some special kitten formula. For example, if a kitten is under three weeks old and is not receiving mother cat's milk, then you will have to give the kitten formula every two to three hours. It will have to be under the guidance of a vet so you are not under feeding or over feeding. Gradually, as the kitten grows to about three weeks old the feedings will be larger feedings and they will become less frequent to about every six to eight hours. Once weaned from the mother cat or formula, a kitten will be eating kitten food and drinking plenty of fresh, clean water. My owner made sure that I was given good food and delicious fresh water to keep me healthy.

14. The ragdoll breed of cat was developed in which American State?

From Quiz Wags and Whiskers

Answer: California

15. A medium- to large-sized breed, this dog is mostly noted for its black fur and brown spots located just above the eyes and on the underside of the body.

16. Which environment is best suited to a Jack Russell Terrier?

From Quiz Owning a Jack Russell

Answer: Countryside

Jack Russells require regular exercise as they have a lot of energy. They are hunting dogs and the majority love running. Sometimes the JR can also adapt to city life, but a countryside environment is the best, as there is a lot of space and many places to explore, such as fields and woods.

17. Hello. I am one of the most intelligent dog breeds and am popular with many people. I come in three different sizes. My original purpose was for hunting game, but today most people just give me silly haircuts and take me to shows.

From Quiz Which Dog Am I?

Although they're sometimes called "French", no one knows the exact origin of the poodle. Most experts believe that poodles came from Germany or Russia. Poodles are among the most intelligent of dogs, which is probably why many people have them as pets.

18. "Run and fetch him a suitable drug." If your dog is in pain, is it okay to give him an aspirin?

From Quiz What Is the Matter with Poor Puggy-Wug?

Answer: Only if the vet tells you so

Do not give Puggy-Wug an aspirin or any other kind of drug for pain that is meant for people, unless a vet tells you it is okay. Small dogs like pugs have a harder time than larger dogs breaking down aspirin in their bodies. It could also make their stomachs bleed. But even big dogs can have problems if you give them too much. Only give medicines to your pet that a vet tells you or your parents to give. And never give aspirin to a cat. Ever.

19. What is another name for a red cat?

21. Dogs come in all shapes and sizes - very large, large, medium, small and extra small. What is generally referred to as the smallest dog breed in the world?

From Quiz What Do You Know About Dogs?

Answer: Chihuahua

The Chihuahua is the world's smallest dog. This small breed has a long life expectancy well into the mid-teens.. The tiny Chihuahua can weigh from 2 to 6 pounds (900 grams to 2.7 kilograms) and can have a smooth coat or a long coat with feathered ears, neck, feet, legs and tail. The Chihuahua is graceful, lively, curious, intelligent, loyal and affectionate but has some terrier-like qualities.

22. This breed was developed in Scotland to retrieve water fowl. They come in one color that can vary from very light to quite dark. They are described as gentle and loyal. What breed was my dog Ginger?

From Quiz For Dog Lovers

Answer: Golden retriever

Golden retrievers are popular therapy dogs and guide dogs. Their gentle disposition makes them great family pets. But watch out--they love the water and do not hesitate to go full tilt into any decent-sized body of water.

23. When my owner picked me out of the litter, it was love at first sight and all because she loves black and white cats. What are we often referred to as, because of our coloring?

From Quiz Panda's Quiz

Answer: Tuxedo cats

Tuxedo cats are bi-colored cats, meaning that we have two colors of fur, black and white. Sometimes people will call us Billicats because of our color pattern. To be called a tuxedo cat our black fur has to be solid black and the white fur has to be limited to the belly, chest, throat, face and paws. White on the chin is acceptable too. In essence, a tuxedo cat looks like it's wearing a tuxedo. That is exactly what I looked like. I, Panda, was a beautiful tuxedo cat with the blackest black fur and the whitest white fur!

24. What were beagles bred for in England?

From Quiz Wags and Whiskers

Answer: To use as trail hounds for hunting.

They were bred in England to hunt rabbits and hares because of their ability to only focus on the one scent when hunting.

25. This breed is most commonly compared to a teddy bear! They have fluffy fur, big eyes and a purple tongue.

From Quiz A Breed Apart

Answer: Chow Chow

The Chow Chow was originally bred for hunting and protection purposes, but due to their sweet appearance they have been relatively popular pets for some time.

26. Once you have selected your kitten, what is the best and safest way to transport it home?

From Quiz How to Select and Raise a Kitten

Answer: Pet carrier

Of course you should have a proper pet carrier. This helps to avoid unnecessary stress on the kitten as well as giving it a sense of security. Remember, being removed from its brothers and sisters can be traumatic. A car ride can be frightening for this little animal that has never been exposed to these sorts of things before. Inside a pet carrier the kitten is well protected, feels safer and can look around without feeling in danger.

27. Cheerio! I'm sure you'll recognize me- I am in many cartoons, movies, and am the unofficial canine mascot of Great Britain, as my name suggests. Although my wrinkled face may make me look mean, I am one of the sweetest and most gentle breeds.

From Quiz Which Dog Am I?

Answer: English bulldog

You had to know there would be a bulldog! Today's bulldog is believed to be descended from the huge Mastiff and little Pug. Although they are very loving, they require a lot of care and special attention.

28. When Heinz was a puppy he didn't know that he had to go outside to go to the toilet and sometimes he would do something he shouldn't do on the carpet. What do you think I did to help teach him?

From Quiz My Dog Heinz

Answer: I watched him carefully and when I thought he wanted to go, I would take him outside

Eventually he learned that outside was the right place to be to do what he had to do. You must never shout at a puppy or a kitten for making a mess inside the house, because they have not yet learnt anything different. After all, we were all babies once, and we wore nappies (diapers) - we didn't know how to use the toilet, did we?

29. "Wrap him up tenderly all in a rug." Sometimes when dogs are kept indoors they will soil the rugs. What is not a good idea for dealing with the problem?

From Quiz What Is the Matter with Poor Puggy-Wug?

Answer: Scolding the dog

Take the dog to the vet to see if he has a medical problem that makes him lose control. Clean the rug (ask your parents to help) with cleaners made for removing urine to take away the smell, so he won't think the rug is a good place to go! If you feed and walk the dog at the same time every day, you will give your pet structure, and he will know when to expect to be able to relieve himself. Be sure to praise him when he does! Make the walk last half an hour to an hour to reduce anxiety. If the dog pees because he gets excited, try ignoring him for ten minutes when you come home from school. Scolding will not work; in fact, it can backfire because some dogs will pee when they are scolded to show their submission! Besides, the dog will not understand why you are scolding him, so try these positive suggestions instead.
