Answer: Basset Hound

The name basset hound derives from the French for 'low' (bas), which fairly well describes bassets, whose bellies are only a few inches above the ground. Because of their hanging skin structure, Bassets often look sad but they are really friendly and playful and make ideal pets for families with children.
Fred Basset has been the star of a newspaper comic strip since 1963. Elvis Presley sang "Hound Dog" to a basset named Sherlock on TV in 1956. The sheriff in the TV series "Dukes of Hazard" had a basset named Flash.
2. With long, powerful legs and slim build, this breed can reach its top speed of 43 mph within six strides making them ideal for racing. Santa's Little Helper, the family pet in TV show "The Simpsons", is a member of this breed. Which member of the Hound Group appears on the logo for North America's most famous inter-city bus company?

Answer: Greyhound

Very few mammals such as the cheetah and the pronghorn antelope can accelerate faster than a greyhound from a standing start. Originally bred for hunting and coursing, greyhound racing has been a popular sport in the U.S., England and Ireland since the 1920s.
English rock group The Who sang about greyhound racing on their 1968 single, "Dogs". The 1994 album, "Parklife", by Britpop band Blur, features greyhounds on its cover. Sports teams from numerous colleges and universities (such as Loyola University in Maryland) use the greyhound as both their mascot and their nickname.

Marley, in the hit film "Marley and Me", was a member of this breed. Puppies from which member of the Sporting Group are regularly seen in advertisements for Andrex toilet tissue?

Answer: Labrador Retriever

Often known simply as labs, labrador retrievers have been the most popular breed of family dog in Great Britain, U.S.A., Australia and Canada for more than 20 years.
Originally bred for duck hunting in England in the 19th century, they are now the world's favorite assistance dog. Easily trained, they not only help the blind but also assist people with autism or who are recovering from long illnesses as well as carrying out detection duties for law enforcement agencies.
The first dog to both ride on the London Eye and to use a chip-and-pin ATM was a labrador retriever. On TV, Rowdy on "Scrubs", Vincent in "Lost" and Pharaoh and Isis in "Downton Abbey" are all labrador retrievers.
4. Widely considered the most intelligent of all dogs, this breed competes regularly in sheepdog trials. Rex and Fly, two members of the breed, starred in the 1995 film "Babe". Which member of the "Herding Group" appeared for many years as John Noakes' companion, Shep, on BBC TV series "Blue Peter"?

Answer: Border Collie

Border collies are smart, athletic, acrobatic, extremely energetic, intelligent and the greatest family pet and companion, but then perhaps I am biased as the one in the photograph is my own old dog, George.
One border collie, Rico, was able to recognize more than 200 objects by name whilst another, Chaser, in 2010 was tested to have a vocabulary of more than 1,000 words.
In the TV series "Little House on the Prairie", Laura's second dog, Bandit, was a border collie. Murray was the family pet in "Mad About You", and who can ever think of John Noakes on "Blue Peter" without hearing him say "Get down, Shep"? I know how he feels!
5. Named for the 8,100-foot high pass between Switzerland and Italy where the breed originated, they were originally bred for mountain rescue work. A member of this breed played the title role in the 1992 comedy film "Beethoven". Which member of the Working Group, particularly known for their enormous size, is pictured here?

Answer: Saint Bernard

Named for the Great Saint Bernard's Pass through the Alps, they were originally known as Saint Dogs, Noble Steeds, Alpenmastiff or Barry Dogs. Both the pass and the travelers' hospice at the summit were named for the 11th-Century monk Bernard of Menthon. There have been many famous Saint Bernards: J.M Barrie had one named Porthos and Orville Wright's was called Scipio. Buck, from Jack London's novel "Call of the Wild" is described as half St Bernard and half Scotch shepherd dog; and Cujo, the title character of a dark Stephen King novel is a Saint Bernard.

The mascots of the Northampton Saints (rugby union), the New Orleans Saints (NFL) and Colorado Avalanche (MLB) are all Saint Bernards (the New Orleans one is named Gumbo and the other two are Bernie).
6. Energetic and reliant on a high level of exercise and stimulation, they were originally bred for fox hunting. Answer: Jack Russell Terrier

The Jack Russell terrier is named after the hunting enthusiast who first bred them in Devon, England in 1795, Reverend John Russell, nicknamed The Sporting Parson. Despite their small size, these dogs are high energy and are not really recommended for apartment dwellers.

Their drive makes them ideal for dog sports such as flyball or agility. On TV, celebrity chef Rick Stein is regularly upstaged by his Jack Russell, Chalky. In film, Jack Russells have starred in "Crimson Tide" (in 1995 with Gene Hackman) and in "The Mask" (in 1994 with Jim Carrey).

After his appearance in the 2011 film "The Artist", there was a campaign for Uggie the Jack Russell to be nominated for an Oscar!
7. Named for a state in Mexico, this is the world's smallest breed of dog. They have distinctive large, round eyes, large, erect ears and an "apple-shaped" head. Which member of the Toy Group, often photographed as the lap dog of the stars, is pictured here?

Answer: Chihuahua

The Chihuahua is named after the "Free and Sovereign State of Chihuahua" in northern Mexico, which borders the U.S. states of New Mexico and Texas. It is the world's smallest dog breed -- Kennel Club regulations stipulate a maximum weight of six pounds.

The breed can be divided into two variants, long-coat and smooth-coat (i.e. short-haired). As far as colors go, though, they can come in just about any color combination and pattern, from solid through marked to slashed. Numerous celebrities own or have owned Chihuahuas: singer/TV talent judge Paula Abdul, for instance, has four, named Chomps, Thumbelina, Tulip and Bessie Moo. Taco Bell featured a Chihuahua named Gidget in an ad campaign.

In film, Elle Woods' dog Bruiser in "Legally Blonde" and its sequel is a Chihuahua.
8. This breed can be traced back the early 12th century and is amongst the intelligentsia of the canine world. Facially, it looks almost fox-like. Which member of the Herding Group, the preferred breed of Queen Elizabeth II, who has owned more than 30, is captured relaxing in the extremely cute picture here?

Answer: Pembroke Welsh Corgi

One of two breeds of Welsh corgi (the other being the Cardigan Welsh corgi), the Pembroke Welsh corgi is one of the smallest members of the Herding Group. Not that its diminutive stature detracts from its ability -- despite short legs, an athletic body makes this breed very efficient for herding poultry, sheep and cattle. Bought in 1936 by Queen Elizabeth's father, King George VI when he was still Prince Albert Duke of York, Rozavel Golden Eagle who had the nickname Dookie was the first Pembroke Welsh corgi owned by the British royal family.

The first actually owned by Elizabeth was Susan, which was given to her on her 18th birthday. All of the Queen's subsequent corgis (and dorgis -- a corgi crossed with a dachshund) have descended from Susan. Novelist Stephen King also owned a Pembroke Welsh corgi named Marlowe; he used it as the model for a character in "The Dark Tower" series.
9. This breed is easily recognizable by its distinctive black- or liver-spotted coat. Advertisements for Budweiser beer, where the is carriage drawn by the famous Clydesdale horses, always includes at least one of these carriage dogs. Which member of the Non-Sporting Group, which received a massive boost in popularity because of Dodie Smith's 1956 novel, is pictured here?

Answer: Dalmatian

Also known as a carriage dog, a spotted coach dog, firehouse dog or plum pudding dog this breed is most commonly known today as a Dalmatian, a name derived from the Dalmatia region of Croatia.
Dalmatian puppies are born pure white but their first spots start to appear after about three weeks. Although almost all Dalmatians have either black or liver spots on a white coat, their eyes do vary in color -- they can be brown, amber or blue and it is not at all uncommon for a dog to have one brown eye and one blue.
The 1956 Dodie Smith novel was, of course, "The Hundred and One Dalmatians" (also called "The Great Dog Robbery") and the subsequent 1961 Walt Disney film as well as the numerous variations that have followed since.
10. Originally bred in Germany as a type of water dog, this breed comes in three variations: Standard, Miniature and Toy. Active, intelligent and elegant with dark, oval eyes and an alert expression, these dogs are sometimes made to look rather silly by their hair stylist. Which member of the Non-Sporting Group, which includes Roly, a regular member of TV's "Eastenders" cast from 1985 until 1993, is pictured here?

Answer: Poodle

Originally called a pudelhund (meaning 'dog that splashes'), the poodle comes in numerous colors, from white to black with brown, silver, gray, silver beige, apricot, red, cream, sable, and various patterns such as phantom and brindle in between.
Nobel Prize winning novelist John Steinbeck owned a poodle named Charley who was immortalized in the author's 1961 book "Travels with Charley: In Search of America" (although Steinbeck's actual dog was black and the one in the book was blue). Actor Patrick Swayze owned a poodle named Derek.
In Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's tragic two-part play "Faust", Mephistopheles first appears to the title character in the form of a black poodle.
