Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which country was Moses when he asked the Pharaoh (king) to "let my people go" in the Bible?

Answer: Egypt

The descendants of Israel had been held captive in Egypt for about 400 years when Moses was instructed by God to demand of the Pharaoh that they should be allowed to leave so that they could hold a feast to God in the wilderness. After 10 attempts they were finally allowed to leave Egypt behind and eventually (forty years later) made it to the land that God had promised them.

2. In the early 6th century BC a foreign king attacked and conquered the kingdoms of Israel and Judah. The Temple was destroyed, much loot carried away, and many of the Jews deported to a foreign country -- this is known as "the Captivity". To which kingdom were they sent?

Answer: Babylon

Saul, David and then Solomon were the first three rulers of a united Jewish kingdom, which broke into two parts, Israel (or Samaria) and Judah, around 900 BC. A few hundred years later king Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon conquered first the kingdom of Israel (around 595 BC) and then the kingdom of Judah (in 587 BC). The city of Babylon was located on the Euphrates River in what is today the country of Iraq.

3. According to the Biblical book of Genesis, Abraham's servant went to Nahor to find a wife for whom?

Answer: Isaac

In Genesis 24 Abraham sends his servant back to Abraham's homeland to find Isaac a wife because Abraham did not want his son marrying a Canaanite. The servant asked God to have a woman who would marry Isaac at a well who would not only give him a drink but also provide water for his camels. Rebekah was at the well and at the end of chapter 24 she is married to Isaac.

Ishmael was Isaac's older half-brother who was sent away with his mother Hagar in Genesis 21.

Jacob and Esau were Isaac and Rebekah's fraternal (that means they were not identical) twin sons.

4. This question is a little salty! The Dead Sea is located where God burned two cities with fire. As described in the Bible, who was turned to a pillar of salt for looking back on Sodom and Gomorrah?

Answer: Lot's wife

According to the Bible, Sodom and Gomorrah were so evil that God destroyed them with fire. He sent two angels to rescue Abraham's nephew Lot from the city before it burned. The angels told Lot and his family to run as far as they could and not to look back. Lot's wife turned around to look while the fire was coming down from heaven. She died by turning into a pillar of salt.

The Dead Sea is on top of where the cities were once located. It is known as the lowest place on earth, 420m (1,380ft) below sea level. The water is so salty, objects and humans can float.

5. In the Old Testament book of I Samuel, Saul is anointed as the first King over Israel. Later, David became King. Which of David's sons followed in his father's footsteps as the third King over Israel?

Answer: Solomon

The books of I and II Samuel and I and II Kings are filled with interesting stories. The Bible makes no attempt to hide these characters' flaws, laying bare their sins of murder and lust, among others. But these books also speak to God's redemption and His faithfulness in His promises to David.

6. As the Old Testament describes, the people of Nineveh were not following God's commandments, so God decided to send someone to warn them to change their ways. The man God chose didn't want to go at first, and ended up taking a very strange ride before he changed his mind. What was the man's name?

Answer: Jonah

Jonah didn't want to help the people of Nineveh because they were enemies of his own homeland. Instead of obeying God right away, he tried to run away by taking a ship to another country. There was a big storm and the men on the ship threw Jonah overboard. After he was swallowed by a huge fish, he realized he had done the wrong thing and he prayed for God to forgive him. God heard Jonah's prayers and he was saved when the fish took him to the shore and let him go on dry land. This time, Jonah did as he was told!

7. In the book of Judges, Chapter 6, who was visited by an angel of the Lord in Ophrah, whilst he was threshing wheat in the winepress to hide it from the Midianites?

Answer: Gideon

See Judges 6:11. The angel's first words to him are 'The Lord is with you, mighty warrior' (v12). Gideon probably didn't feel very brave at that time in his life, since he was in hiding. But with God's help he defeated the Midianites with the help of just 300 men (see Chapter 7).

10. The disciple John said, in John 3:16, "God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son". What was the name of the place where Jesus died on a cross?

Answer: Calvary

In the Bible, Jesus was taken to Calvary and crucified because some of the Jewish leaders hated what he was teaching. Jesus had been doing many miracles and teaching people about love. He told his disciples that he was going to be put to death, but that he would come back again. The disciples were very saddened when they saw their friend being beaten and hurt on a cross. However, they were filled with joy when Jesus returned alive and well (Luke 24, NIV).

Jesus told them to not be sad. He said, "You believe in God. Believe in me. I am going to prepare a place for you, where you can be with me always. I will come back and take you there with me. You will know where I am going." (John 14:1-4, NIV)
