Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. It's well lit here and there are a few seats that can be moved up and down. There is a large cape around me. I hear buzzing at the chair beside me while I can see my reflection in the mirror in front of me. Where am I?

Answer: Hair salon

I am at the local hair salon/barber shop getting my hair cut. The chairs move up and down so that the hairdresser/barber can have their customer at a good height when doing their hair. The customer beside me is getting a brush cut so the electric hair clippers are being used.

They make a buzzing sound. My hairdresser/barber always puts a cape around me so that hair cuttings don't get on my clothes. Before the haircut, I was brought to a chair that has its back to a sink. I sat down, leaned back and had my hair washed.

After my cut is finished, I'll have my hair dried and be good to go
2. I'm in my swimsuit but I can see my breath. I have to get my stomach wet in there? Are you kidding me? What am I about to do?

Answer: A polar bear plunge

A polar bear plunge is a very different kind of winter event. People who participate in this event have to enter a body of water, in the freezing cold of winter weather, no matter how cold the water is. In Canada, the polar bear plunge is done as a New Year's Day tradition. In the USA the plunges in the snowy cold winter are generally held to raise money for a charitable organization like the Special Olympics, for example.
3. I have a bucket and a stool. That's all that I need. What am I going to do?

Answer: Milk a cow

I need the stool to sit on and the bucket to collect the milk into while I milk a cow. It's a good idea for me to take a ribbon and tie the cow's tail to its back leg because she might swish her tail and hit me in the eye with it. Securing the cow with a halter tied to a post helps to keep me safe from being kicked.

It's important that I wash the udders with soap and warm water, before milking, so as not to contaminate the milk. I have to place the bucket under the udder, sit on the stool and be ready to move fast if the cow gets cranky or doesn't want to cooperate.

It helps to have some petroleum jelly on my hands to lessen the amount of friction as I milk the cow. I select teats that are diagonal to each other, with one hand on each. Squeezing the base of the teat and then squeezing in a downward motion to push out the milk is tricky.

It's important that I keep my grip at the base at the same time. I have to be firm but gentle. Once the udder looks deflated then I can switch my hand positions in order to draw milk from the other two teats. Sometimes, I play some nice music for the cows.

The music often will relax the cow and that makes it easier to milk her. The barn cats like to come around and get a squirt or two of milk when I first start. To prevent contamination, the first squirts of milk are not collected. I think I'll use a milking machine next time. That might be easier and it will milk the cow automatically.
4. What are those two golf balls doing here? I'm glad I have this suit, helmet and these heavy boots on, but I can still jump quite high and far. It took me a while to get here. Where am I?

Answer: On the moon

I am an astronaut up on the moon. The golf balls I can see are the ones that Alan Shepard hit when he was up here on the Apollo 14 mission way back in 1971. Did you know that Shepard was the fifth astronaut to walk on the moon? Shepard used a six iron to hit two golf balls. Since there is no atmosphere on the moon I have to wear this spacesuit so that I can breathe and so I have the right air pressure to keep me safe.

The boots help to keep me on the surface of the moon since the gravity there is only 1/6 that of earth's gravity. What I like is that on earth I weigh one hundred and fifty pounds but on the moon I only weigh about twenty five pounds.
5. There is a bright light shining in my eyes and I have a paper bib clipped to my shirt. The chair is comfortable as I'm put into a reclining position. Where am I?

Answer: At the dentist

At the dentist office I like to climb into the dentist chair. It's very comfortable. My dentist has a television in the ceiling so that I can watch television while he cleans my teeth. The bright light is for him to be able to see properly while he works. The light is moveable so he adjusted it out of my eyes and aimed it at my mouth area so he could work on my teeth. My dentist's assistant always clips a paper bib to my shirt so my clothes don't get spattered with anything while the dentist is working on my teeth.
6. I'm on a team and I'm mounted on a fast and agile horse. It's like a gigantic game of croquet. What am I doing?

Answer: Playing polo

Polo is a sport that is played on horseback. There are two teams and with a large mallet I have to whack a white ball into the opposing team's goal. The ball is made of either wood or plastic. The field I'm playing on is made of grass and is three hundred yards long by two hundred yards wide.

It could be one hundred and sixty yards wide, too, but I like it on the largest playing field. On my team there are four of us, including me. Period of play are called a chukkas and in this game we can play four, six or eight chukkas.

A chukka lasts about seven minutes. After each chukka, all of the players switch to fresh horses. After each score, teams change ends so that it is fair, depending on wind direction and that sort of thing. Everyone has to play with their right hand.

The ball is bowled, by a mounted umpire, into the center of the field. This starts the game and each chukka. Of course I have to wear a protective helmet with a chin strap, riding boots that are just below my knee, white pants and my team's colored shirt, with my position number on the back.

There are optional pieces of equipment like gloves, kneepads, wristbands, spurs, whip and a face mask. I like to wear all of the items so I am safe from injury, as much as possible.
7. It's really dark in here with the door closed. I keep banging my head on the hangers and tripping on the shoes on the floor. Where am I?

Answer: In a closet, in my bedroom

I am in a closet in my bedroom. The closet is where my clothes are neatly hanging on some plastic hangers and on some metal hangers. I keep my shoes and slippers stored on the closet floor. With the closet door closed, it is quite dark in here. It makes a good hiding spot when I play hide and seek.
8. It's very noisy in here! People are yelling and cheering. There are popcorn, hot dog and soda pop vendors going up and down the aisles selling their goods. The announcer just said that someone stole a base. How rude! Where in the world am I?

Answer: A baseball stadium

I'm at the stadium, sitting in the bleachers, watching a Major League baseball game. How exciting it is! I bought a hot dog and some cola to enjoy while I watch the game. There are nine players on each team and my team is winning. Every time a player crosses home plate safely it is counted as a run, giving that team a point. People yell and cheer when points are scored, when the batter hits the ball, when a fielder catches a ball and for almost everything! It's a lot of fun watching a game like this. I brought my baseball glove and guess what? I caught a ball that was hit foul and up into the area that I'm sitting in. I can keep this ball and when the game is finished I can try to get the player who batted this ball to sign his autograph on it. The players on each team are made up of the pitcher, back catcher, first baseman, second baseman, third baseman and the shortstop.

These are the in-field positions. The other three players are the left-field, center-field and right-field positions.

These are the out-field positions. Each game has nine innings but if the score is tied after nine innings they play over-time innings until the tie is broken. Each batter has to try to hit the ball with a baseball bat as the opposing team's pitcher pitches a ball toward them. If the batter hits the ball and it lands outside of the boundary lines it is considered as a foul ball and counts as a strike, but only twice. A player's hit can't be called a strike after that. It takes three strikes to be out, or for a fair hit or foul ball to be caught by the opposing team. Each player's turn can end up as a walk to first base if the pitcher doesn't throw the ball in the batting zone. Four balls give the batter a free walk to first base. If the pitcher hits a batter with the ball, the batter automatically gets a walk to first base. When a batter hits the ball they run the bases in order from first, second, third and home. Sometimes they hit a fair ball right out of the playing field and that's counted as a home run. If there are other team mates on the bases, they run to home base, in order. So a home run can end up scoring from one to four runs. If there are four runs scored by a home run, that's called a grand slam.
9. Now I have a clump of dough and have to toss it up into the air to make it flat and round. There are all sorts of things that I can put on this dough once I place it in a pan. What am I making?

Answer: Pizza

I'm happily preparing my dough so I can fit it into my pizza pan. Once I do that, then I'll brush on a little bit of olive oil, spread on some nice zesty pizza tomato sauce and then sprinkle on some Italian spices. After I do that I will have to sprinkle some parmesan cheese on the pizza then place pepperoni, diced green and red peppers, sliced mushrooms and a few diced onions. On top of all of these toppings I'll put some shredded mozzarella cheese. Next I will place the pizza into the oven at 425 degrees Fahrenheit for twenty to twenty-five minutes. My favorite part is eating the pizza!
10. I'm clipping an "Erie Dearie" onto my quick change while my friend is using a hook with a wiggly worm on it. What am I up to now?

Answer: Fishing

I'm fishing! My favorite fishing rod is my graphite "Ugly Stik". I have a reel with strong line on it and at the end of this line I have a quick change set up, so I can change lures fast and not miss out on my fishing time by tying lures onto the line. An "Erie Dearie" is my favorite lure which I use to catch Walleye, also known as pickerel. I have my own tackle box filled with various styles of lures from spoons to spinners. I have fish hook removers, first aid supplies and many more items that I use when I'm out fishing. Fishing is a fun and relaxing sport that requires patience and a love of the outdoors.
