Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. French city with a halfway bridge

Answer: Avignon

Avignon is a city in the South of France. Popes lived in Avignon from 1309 until 1377.
The first bridge on the Rhone river was built in 1177. It has been entirely rebuilt a few times, for the last time in 1345. At that moment it stretched out from one bank of the river to the other, as bridges should do. But alas: there was no money to keep the bridge intact. So after all this time only 4 out of 22 arches remain. The bridge seems to reach halfway, but it isn't even quite that far.
2. Country with many ruins on many islands

Answer: Greece

Greece is a country with a very old civilisation. Most ruins of buildings date from 2,500 years ago or more. Greece has more than 1,200 islands, of which 227 are (still) inhabited. Most of the inhabited islands are known for their tourist industry and their merchant fleet.
3. Tourist city in Belgium with Belfry

Answer: Bruges

Bruges is one of the best visited cities in Belgium. The city centre has entirely been rebuilt in medieval style. There are also twenty-odd museums in Bruges.
The Belfry is one of the highest buildings in Bruges, and you can climb it on foot all the way to the top. Mind you: it's a long climb. It's 83 m high and you need to take 366 steps to get up there.
4. Country in large part below sea level

Answer: Netherlands

The Netherlands deserves the nickname "low country" quite well. About a quarter of the Netherlands is situated BELOW sea level. But the Dutch people are great dike builders. In fact, many Asian countries ask the Dutch to build their dikes.
Notable points of interest in the Netherlands are the cities Amsterdam, Volendam, Den Haag, Maastricht and Utrecht, and of course the Delta Works (a large complex of dikes and locks).
5. Country with Costa del Sol

Answer: Spain

Spain has many beaches. On the Mediterranean Sea the beaches are divided into the areas Costa Brava (Rough Coast), Costa Dorada (Gold Coast), Costa Blanca (White Coast) and Costa del Sol (Sun Coast).
The Costa del Sol is the most southern beach in Spain. Its most important city is Malaga.
6. City without cars but with gondolas

Answer: Venice

Venice is one of the most important cities in Italy. It is situated in the north, in the Venetian Lagoon, close to the Adriatic Sea. The city of Venice is built on more than 100 islands connected by canals and bridges. Cars are not allowed in the city centre (they would also be impracticable). People go around on foot or by boat.

The popular boat types are the gondola (a typical boat rowed in medieval style) and the vaporetto (water bus).
7. German city with beer festival

Answer: Munich

Munich is a large city in the south of Germany. The best known festival in Munich is the Oktoberfest, that oddly takes place in the last two weeks of September instead of the month after which it is named.
The Okotoberfest is a period of two weeks in which visitors can buy large pints of beer (a full litre!) and typical German breads, sausages, and so on. There are also musical acts, especially brass bands and yodellers.
Bah, beer, thinks Aldo. As a nine year old he doesn't like beer - it stinks.
Aldo hoped for a pint of a soft drink, but that is not available.
8. English city with many musical theatres

Answer: London

London is the capital city of England. Contrary to most European countries, people drive there at the left side of the road. Take care at crossroads! London has a tradition of theatre productions, including musical theatre.
Some shows run for ages. For instance, the play "The Mousetrap" started in 1952 and is still performed by the same theatre company. The longest running musical show is "Les Miserables", continuously performed for over 31 years.
9. Country with cities as Gdansk, Szczecin and Krakow

Answer: Poland

Poland is country to the east of Germany. The capital is Warsaw, centrally located. Krakow in the south has many beautiful buildings, inscribed on the Unesco World Heritage List. Gdansk is a harbour city in the north. Szczecin (the spelling may seem odd, but that is typical Polish) is another harbour city, near the frontier with Germany.
10. Country known for small, colourful toy bricks

Answer: Denmark

The colourful small bricks mentioned in the question are all made by one single company: Lego. A Danish toy maker invented a click system for plastic bricks in 1947 and perfected it in 1958, taking out a patent on it.
Lego opened a theme park named Legoland in 1968 in the small Danish town of Billund. This city is the place where the original factory for Lego was founded, and at that time (1932) it counted only a few hundred inhabitants. Nowadays the city has grown and is equipped with the second busiest Danish airport.
