The World Cup was held for the first time in 1930, and has been held every four years since, apart from 1942 and '46, due to the Second World War.

The very first World Cup took place in Uruguay, and was won by the host nation, who defeated arch-rivals Argentina 4-2 in the final.

Answer: Jules Rimet

Jules Rimet was a Frenchman, and President of soccer's organising body, FIFA. It was his idea to have a World Cup for nations, so the cup played for was named the Jules Rimet Trophy in his honour.

Answer: 32

The 2010 World Cup took place in South Africa, in June and July 2010. The host nation qualified automatically, whilst 205 countries took part in a qualifying tournament to fill the other 31 places. The first tournament to feature as many as 32 teams was the 1998 edition.

Brazil had already won the trophy in both 1958 and '62, and would complete the hat-trick in 1970. In the final in Mexico City, they defeated Italy 4-1. A new trophy was then sculpted in time for the 1974 tournament.

Spain reached the final for the first time in 2010, whilst the Netherlands had previously been beaten in the finals of both 1974 and '78. Andres Iniesta scored the winning goal in extra time to win the trophy for the Spaniards.

Answer: Mexico

Mexico had first hosted the tournament in 1970. The 1986 event was originally awarded to Colombia, but they withdrew due to economic considerations. The Mexicans stepped in to save the tournament, and, despite a devastating earthquake which struck the country in 1985, the event was a major success.
9. What World Cup first occurred when the USA played Switzerland in Pontiac in 1994?

Answer: First indoor match

On June 18th, 1994, the USA and Switzerland played out a 1-1 draw under the roof of the Pontiac Silverdome, the then-home of the Detroit Lions of the NFL. The stadium would later host Romania v Switzerland, Sweden v Russia and Brazil v Sweden, all first round group games, but was not used for any of the games in the knockout phase.

Answer: France

Fontaine scored four times against defending champion West Germany, and three times against Paraguay. Despite his efforts, France failed to win the trophy, with Brazil defeating hosts Sweden in the final.
