Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When you start counting one - two - three - four - which is the first number you will say which contains the letter 'd'?

Answer: 100

Amazing as it sounds, but you have to count that high to find a number with an 'a' as well! In some parts of the world you would count ninety eight - ninety nine - one hundred - one hundred And one - etc. In others you would say ninety eight - ninety nine - A hundred - a hundred and one - etc.

In America the first number with an 'a' is a thousAnd as they count ninety eight - ninety nine - one hundred - one hundred one etc.
2. What was the name of the Roman soldier who was in charge of a hundred-man unit?

Answer: centurion

Although this soldier was given the name of his rank from the number 100, sometimes he could have been in charge of only eighty men. This was because the army would not be rearranged after losses in battle or fewer reinforcements. While other ranks would have plumes going from front to back on their helmets, including his second-in-command, the optio, a centurion's plumage (usually horsehair) went from side to side.

This was so he could be easily identified.
3. Which fictional character lived in the Hundred Acre Wood?

Answer: Winnie-the-Pooh

"Deep in the Hundred Acre Wood,
Where Christopher Robin plays,
You'll find the enchanted neighbourhood
of Christopher's childhood days.
A donkey named Eeyore is his friend,
And Kanga and little Roo,
And Rabbit and Piglet and there's Owl,
But most of all, Winnie the Pooh!"

(words taken from Walt Disney's original 'Winnie the Pooh' films).
4. Which letter is used to represent 100 in Roman numerals?

Answer: C

This comes from the Latin 'centum', and this root is still used in modern language. Our words 'century' and 'cent' come from this Latin word, to indicate 100 years and 100 units respectively. L stands for 50, D for 500 and M for 1,000. When Roman numerals were in regular use (these days the largest numbers ever used are dates so it is obsolete) a horizontal line over the letter would indicate that the number represented would be multiplied by 1,000, so a V with a line would indicate 5,000 and 1,000,000 would be written as an M with a line over it.
5. According to the Old Testament, who was 100 years old when Isaac was born? (Genesis 21;5)

Answer: Abraham

Abraham and Sarah were called by God to leave their native home of Ur to travel as nomads. They had been promised that Abraham would father a nation which would outnumber the grains of sand, but this couple were not to have a child until they were well passed childbearing age (although Abraham did have a son by Sarah's maidservant in the meantime).
6. Do centipedes have 100 legs?

Answer: No

Although the name comes from the Latin root 'centum', none of the types of this creature has 100 legs. The name was given to it because it had lots of legs; fifteen pairs of legs (for example) are a lot more than six or eight!
7. What breed of dog is usually associated with the number 101?

Answer: Dalmatian

'101 Dalmatians' has been a popular Disney animation and later live-action film, for years. It tells the story of two adult Dalmatians whose fifteen puppies get stolen by Cruella DeVille (her surname is a twist on the word 'devil'), and their rescue mission to retrieve them. At the end of the film they return to their humans with ninety nine puppies - 101 Dalmatians in total!
8. Which countries fought each other in the Hundred Years War?

Answer: England and France

The English monarchy laid claim to the French crown through their ancestry - Edward III's mother, Isabella, was a direct descendant of Philip IV the Fair. There followed a dispute which outlasted Kings and drained the treasury as well as the male population of both countries. Most people have heard of Joan of Arc, who played a central role for part of this time, and would recognise a good number of the battle names (Poitiers, for example) from 20th century battles, but fewer realise that the foothold England had in France at the beginning of the war had dwindled to just Calais by the end.

This city would be English for some years before returning to France.
9. The idea of fractions and percentages can send people scurrying to hide their heads under the bedcovers as fast as if they think they saw a ghost! Fear not, this is not a difficult question as maths is not my strong point, either! What percentage of a cake would you have if someone cut you a slice which was exactly one quarter of the whole?

Answer: 25

Back again to the Latin 'centum' being the root of a word, percentages work on 100 being the whole unit, and each percent being one hundredth of that whole. A half would be 50% because fifty is half of a hundred - there are two 50s in 100. A quarter is 25% because there are four 25s in 100.
10. The 100m is seen as the highlight of any athletics meeting, and is usually fiercely contested. At which Olympics did Jesse Owens amaze the world by taking the gold medal for this event in 10.3 seconds?

Answer: 1936 Berlin

Hitler was humiliated by the achievements of this incredibly fit African American; his philosophy was based on the supremacy of the Germanic white Aryan and Owens won four Gold medals at the Olympics held in Nazi Germany. I wonder what Hitler would have done had he known that a street in Berlin would be named after Owens in 1984, four years after his death from lung cancer.
