Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Gears of War
Answer: Lancer
The Lancer is one of those weapons that exudes a sense of coolness. Seen so much in the "Gears of War" series that it appears in series promotional images, the weapon is an automatic rifle with a chainsaw blade attached to run for melee attacks against charging foes, so you know it's the real deal.
This bread-and-butter firearm appears throughout the series, much like the oft-seen, rarely-used Hammer of Dawn, a weapon which can trigger a satellite beam that wipes out enemies from outer space.
2. Dead Space
Answer: Plasma Cutter
Isaac Clarke has to make use of some pretty unique weapons to fight off the Necromorphs in the "Dead Space" series, but his most important weapon may be the Plasma Cutter, his signature firearm improvised out of a mechanical tool used to build in outer space. That's not to say that he doesn't have other weapons (the Ripper and the Line Gun tend to be powerful additions to the arsenal), but the Plasma Cutter, when properly upgraded, can be one of the most useful items used in the series.
3. Ratchet and Clank
Answer: Morph-O-Ray
The Morph-O-Ray is one of the most popular firearms throughout the "Ratchet & Clank" series out of sheer absurdity. When fired at an enemy, the weapon magically transforms them into chickens, rendering them harmless. There are a number of variations on this weapon in the series including the Sheepinator (which transforms foes into sheep).
The "Ratchet & Clank" games somewhat based themselves around crazy weapons; guns like the RYNO, the Suck Cannon, and the Warmonger are all typical fare.
4. Final Fantasy VIII
Answer: Gunblade
A gun that's also a blade? Yup-- sure enough, the Gunblade is one of the main weapons seen in the series starting with "Final Fantasy VIII". Used by Squall, the protagonist of the game, the weapon can be used in ranged or melee attacks; you can swipe with the sword or fire the gun from the hilt since it shoots down the blade.
The weapon returns for "Final Fantasy XII", "XIII", "XIV", and "Dissidia".
5. Donkey Kong 64
Answer: Peanut Popguns
The Peanut Popguns are given to Diddy Kong early on in the Nintendo 64 platformer "Donkey Kong 64" when he visits Funky Kong after getting freed from the first world of the game-- Jungle Japes. The only one of the Kongs to receive two weapons, since he duel-wields pistols, the popguns play a major role in his challenges to reclaim the stolen Kong banana hoard.
The pistols also make their way into Diddy's move-set in "Super Smash Bros. Brawl".
6. Turok: Dinosaur Hunter
Answer: Chronoscepter
Perhaps the strongest gun in this early Nintendo 64 game, the Chronoscepter could only be created if you collected all of the component parts scattered throughout the levels or, alternatively, cheated to obtain it (a perfectly viable option). Surprisingly, in this game filled with dinosaurs and savage enemies, the otherworldliness of the Chronoscepter and the Fusion Cannon wasn't misplaced.
In fact, the series went even more confusing in "Turok 2: Seeds of Evil", when weapons like the Cerebral Bore started showing up.
7. Halo
Answer: Needler
The Needler is a Covenant-made alien weapon that is able to fire high-velocity, sharp, plasma spikes into enemy units. In some games in the series, firing enough of these needles into enemies could cause them to explode though this, of course, would be at one's own discretion if they wanted to use up their ammunition.
While Covenant weapons like the Plasma Pistol and Plasma Rifle used alien tech, human weapons were typically mechanical in nature, loaded with hard-hitting, expected bullets.
8. Goldeneye 007
Answer: PP7
One of the more-used weapons in the game, the regular PP7 appears as early as the first level of the game at the Dam and is considered James Bond's weapon of choice. That's not to say that the game avoids featuring off-kilter weapons as well. For every expected weapon to be in the game-- U.S./UK-made or Russian-made--, there are some like the Moonraker Laser, the Watch Laser, and the RC-P90 to keep things interesting.
9. Metroid Prime
Answer: Power Beam
Samus's arm cannon is able to use several different types of beams in the "Metroid Prime" series though the typical one seen throughout is the Power Beam, which shoots a single concussive shot; most other beams utilize different technology or elemental power to kill specific enemies, open certain doors, or cause other effects.
These beams vary from game to game depending on Samus' circumstances. In "Metroid Prime 2: Echoes", for instance, Samus has a Light Beam and a Dark Beam.
10. Doom
Answer: BFG 9000
An acronym to describe how powerful the gun actually is, the BFG is the most powerful weapon of the original "Doom", able to destroy enemies with extremely-powerful plasma created to burn through enemies with devastating amounts of damage. The gun was so popular that it not only appeared in other games in the series, but also in the "Doom" film adaptation where it was known as the Bio Force Gun.
