Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the medical term 'singultus' used to describe?

Answer: Hiccups

Hiccups can be caused by many different factors, notable amongst which are stress, eating too fast and drunkenness, but in most cases they stop after a few minutes or so.
2. Which country is the world's largest producer of potatoes?

Answer: China

China, which produces around 20% of the world's potatoes, is followed closely by Russia. It seems a little strange for China to produce so many potatoes when the country's traditional staple is in fact rice! Do you know of any Chinese dishes that involve potatoes?
3. Alan Rickman is one of my favourite actors, and has given many performances in mainstream 'hit' films. However, what is the name of the lesser-known 1991 film in which he plays an interrogator opposite Madeleine Stowe?

Answer: 'Closet Land'

A bit of a weird film this, but rather gripping all the same. Stowe plays a children's author abducted and tortured by Rickman because of one of her books, which Rickman interprets as an allegorical criticism of the state.
4. In Australia, what are the 'Olgas'?

Answer: Outback rock formations

The 36 domes that make up the Olgas can be found 48km from Ayers Rock, and were named in honour of the Queen of Spain in 1872. The traditional aboriginal name for the feature is 'Kata Tjuta', or 'the place of many heads'.
5. Which philosophical principle states that we should never make assumptions beyond the minumum necessary?

Answer: Occam's razor

Atheists often use Occam's Razor to argue for the non-existence of God, since he is an 'unnecessary hypothesis'. To hypothesise, or not to hypothesise... that is the question.
6. Approximately how many babies are born into the world every minute?

Answer: 200

Amazing isn't it? The world seems to be filling up and getting to crisis point, with 200 new babies arriving every hour. There must be some very busy parents out there! The United Nations has announced that global population reached the 6 billion mark in October 1999, and humanity is set to head for 7 billion in the next two decades.
7. Everyone knows about 'The Three Musketeers' by Alexandre Dumas, with its cast of dashing French characters. However, do you know the name of the man above whose shop D'Artagnan rented his first room in Paris?

Answer: Monsieur Bonacieux

I hope you didn't say Richelieu, as that's the name of one of the main characters! D'Artagnan rented accommodation from Monsieur Bonacieux when he first came into the city as a poor country bumpkin.
8. In Prague, what are the names of the two famous churches on the Old Town Square?

Answer: St Nicholas Church and Tyn Church

These two beautiful churches luckily escaped the worst of the 2002 floods, although the Tyn Church was closed for a while as certain repairs were made. 'Dobry den' means 'hello', by the way!
9. In Dante's 'Inferno', the location of a sinner in Hell is determind by the number of times a certain being wrapped his tail around him or her. What was this creature's name?

Answer: Minos

Minos was a figure from ancient mythology. Son of Zeus and Europa, he was king of Crete and obviously spent many a happy hour coiling his tail around the unfortunate inmates of Hell.
10. Everyone knows that the capital of Laos is Vientiane, but how should this city's name correctly be pronounced?

Answer: Vieng-chan

Vientiane is found on the Mekong river and has a population of around 450,000. I'm sorry to finish with something so tricky, and I hope you've enjoyed this quiz!
