Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Music A song I absolutely love starts with: "In the arms of an angel..." Which famous and highly talented singer wrote and performed this song?

Answer: Sarah McLachlan

The actual title of the song is simply "Angel". It was part of Sarah McLachlan's 1997 album "Surfacing". Nicholas McDonald included that song in an album released in January 2014.

That song is nowhere near Loreena's style. Celtic Woman don't write songs, they just sing... beautifully too. Sara Macliver is a soprano singer whose repertoire is mainly operatic.
2. Geography Chisinau, Tiraspol, Bendery are the main towns of what country?

Answer: Moldova

Chisinau (formerly Kishinev) is the capital of Moldova. Tiraspol is the second largest city. Bendery is also known as Bender (in Romanian). Moldova is not exactly a popular tourist destination. Apart from its culture, history and Orthodox churches, it offers wine tours as it is highly reputed for its wines.

As for natural landscapes, it's nothing remarkable as most of the country is hilly with a number of forests.
3. History: French History Louis XIII was born in 1601 and died in 1643. Who was his mother?

Answer: Marie de Medici

Marie de Medici (1575-1642) acted as regent during her eldest son Louis' minority, starting in May 1610. Louise of Savoy (1476 -1531) was the mother of Francis I of France. Jeanne d'Albret was Francis I's grandmother. Johanna of Austria his maternal aunt and his godmother.
4. Humanities Martin came home from a party at 4 a.m, totally drunk. He is only 16. He painfully zigzagged to his bedroom and hardly made it. His mother was more than upset, she was furious! She ________.

Answer: blew her top

"Blowing one's top" means being extremely angry. An "egghead" is a very intelligent person. And NO, she didn't find the situation funny at all so she "didn't get a kick out of it". As for calling 911, there was no need for help.
5. Sci/Tech This particle can pass through normal matter without being stopped. What is it?

Answer: Neutrino

Neutrinos do not carry any electric charge (they are electrically neutral), so they are not affected by any electromagnetic forces that normally affect charged particles, like electrons and protons (electrons and protons are impeded by electromagnetic forces). The lepton, basically, is an electron.
6. People In 1875, he was the first person to slaughter cattle in Chicago for shipment. He also introduced refrigerated railroad cars, founded a giant company and pioneered the manufacture of meat byproducts. Who was this man?

Answer: Gustavus Swift

Gustavus Franklin Swift was the founder of Swift and Co. He used animal byproducts to manufacture fertilizers, glue and soap. Jonathan Swift was a 17-18th century Anglo-Irish writer and poet. Taylor Alison Swift is an American singer-songwriter, born in 1989. Adrian Peterson is an American running back in the Minnesota Vikings. He was born in 1985.
7. Hobbies: Food & Drink This marine animal belongs to the Holothuroidea class. The Japanese call it "namako". It is harvested, dried, and used (fresh or rehydrated) in many Chinese soups and stews. It can be fried, braised, or eaten raw as "sashimi" in Japan. What is it?

Answer: Sea cucumber

I had no idea sea cucumbers were edible until now! Starfish are rarely eaten because they are bony, have an unpleasant taste, and may be poisonous depending on the species. Fugu is that famous puffer fish which can be lethal, due to its tetrodotoxin, if not prepared carefully by a skilled cook (don't try it). Sea anemones are not edible.
8. General Knowledge What is "Gagauz"?

Answer: A language

Gagauz is a Turkic language. It is spoken by the ethnic Gagauz people of Moldova, Ukraine, Russia, and Turkey.
9. World: Monuments Where would you go to see a ballet while staying in Moscow?

Answer: The Bolshoi Theatre

"Bolshoi" in Russian means "big" or "large". The Bolshoi Theatre, usually referred to as "The Bolshoi", is one of the most famous theaters in the world, as well as one of the largest. It is known worldwide for its ballets and the Bolshoi Ballet Company, but it also stages operas.

The Imperial Bolshoi Kamenny Theatre used to exist, but it was demolished in 1886; it was located in St Petersburg, not Moscow.

The Petrovka Theatre (or Petrovsky Theatre) began producing plays and operas in 1780, and set the basis of what would later became the Bolshoi Theatre. It was co-founded by an Englishman, Michael Maddox, and Prince Urusov. The building was constructed facing Petrovka Street, hence its name. In 1805 the theater burned down, and the Bolshoi was built on the same site.

As for the Imperial Opera House, there is no such thing in Moscow.
10. Religion The word "kami" refers to the spirits or powers present in rocks, trees, rivers, animals, natural places, etc... In which religion is that concept found?

Answer: Shinto

Shinto is the indigenous religion of Japan and means "way of the gods". "Kami" is a Japanese term that refers to the sacred essence of things and people.

Hindus believes in the existence of celestial entities called "devas", which are the various forms of a supreme god.

Sikhism is monotheistic. Taoism is the philosophy of the "Way" ("Dao" in Pinyin).
