Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Rita Mae Brown, the author of the Mrs Murphy books, was credited with the saying "Good judgment comes from experience, and often experience comes from bad judgment".

Answer: True

Rita Mae Brown was born in 1944 in Hanover, Pennsylvania, three miles north of the Mason-Dixon line. She was the author of the "Mrs. Murphy" series of books featuring a cat called Sneaky Pie Brown and the "Jane Arnold" series about a fox hunting club.
2. Gordon Sumner isn't well known, but his alter ego is. Who is Gordon's alter ego?

Answer: Sting

Sting was the lead singer of the three piece group called The Police. His full name is Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner and he was born on the 2nd October 1951. The other two members were Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers.
3. In 1905, Coca Cola advertised its drink as, "The favourite drink for ladies when thirsty, weary, and despondent".

Answer: True

Other great slogans were 'For headache and exhaustion,' in 1900 and 'Bring in your thirst and go away without it' in 1940. Coca-cola was invented by a Dr. John Stith Pemberton in 1886. It was the doctor's second drink with coca leaves and the kola nut as a basis.

The doctor's first coca leaf drink , Pemberton's French Wine Coca, was actually an imitation of Vin Mariani, a coca-wine drink invented by Angelo Mariani in 1883. Although there were several imitators of the French Coca-Wine, Pemberton's formula was superior.

He was actually quoted saying "I believe that I am now producing a better preparation than that of Mariani."
4. Certain birds such as parrots, parakeets and woodpeckers have zygodactyl feet. Exactly what are zygodactyl feet?

Answer: Two toes point forward and two toes point backwards.

What a grouse word. Pigeon toes, or in-toeing, is a condition causing the toes to point in. It is common in infants and young children. Having two left feet generally means you can't dance and if your web-footed then I'd say you were related to a duck! In woodpeckers,(zygodactyl feet) this type of foot is excellent for clinging to the trunks of trees.

The two toes in the back give the bird more support. For parrots, this type of foot is excellent for holding food. Parrots often feed by holding their food in one foot and bringing the food up to their beak, just like we use our hands to eat.

Although owls have this toe arrangement, they have the special ability to rotate their fourth digit to the front. This helps the owl perch, hold its food, and grab its prey.
5. Who or what is a somnambulist?

Answer: Sleepwalker

Shakespeare's 'Lady Macbeth' was a sleepwalker. The origin of the word is Latin, "somnus" means, "sleep" and the word amble comes from the root "ambulare", which means, "to walk". Thus someone who walks in sleep is a somnambulist. A trapeze artist is also called an aerial acrobat, a sousaphone is a type of tuba named after John Philip Sousa and a zombie is an animated human body devoid of a soul.
6. A coney is what sort of animal?

Answer: Rabbit

Basically it's the European rabbit according to the free online dictionary. Rabbits were introduced into Australia by early settlers and have since become a menace and are considered vermin. Western Australia built three rabbit proof fences across its borders to keep out rabbits and other vermin in 1901 and the fences make up an incredible 3256 kilometres (about 2023 miles).
7. Which country put the first woman into space?

Answer: The former USSR

The first woman in space was Soviet woman Valentina Tereshkova, born March 6th, 1937. She was launched into space on June 13th 1963, on the Vostok 6. She was the first, and thus far only, woman to make a solo flight into space. Information courtesy historyswoman.com
8. How many years are celebrated in a golden wedding anniversary?

Answer: 50

Yes, 50 long years, half a century is a grouse reason to celebrate I think. 40 years is a ruby anniversary and if you make it to 60 wonderful years it's a diamond anniversary. Parts of the traditional list of anniversaries have existed since medieval times. Historians can trace the origins of silver and golden anniversaries to medieval Germany, where garlands made of these metals were presented as gifts for the 25th and 50th years of marriage. The rest of the list may not be as traditional as you think. The traditional list, as we know it today, did not exist until 1937. In that year, the American National Retail Jeweler Association published a list, which associated a material for each Anniversary up to the 15th year and then each fifth year after that up to the 60th Anniversary.
The following is the materials list from 1937, through the 60th year:

First - Paper
Second - Cotton
Third - Leather
Fourth - Fruit/Flowers
Fifth - Wood
Sixth - Candy/Iron
Seventh - Wool/Copper
Eighth - Bronze/Pottery
Ninth - Pottery/Willow
Tenth - Tin/Aluminum
Eleventh - Steel
Twelfth - Silk/Linen
Thirteenth - Lace
Fourteenth - Ivory
Fifteenth - Crystal
Twentieth - China
Twenty-Fifth - Silver
Thirtieth - Pearl
Thirty-Fifth - Coral
Fortieth - Ruby
Forty-Fifth - Sapphire
Fiftieth - Gold
Fifty-fifth - Emerald
Sixtieth - Diamond
9. What creatures live in an apiary?

Answer: Bees

Bees live in an apiary, Birds live in an aviary, Bats live in roosts and Batman lives in the Batcave and drives a Batcar. An apiary is the land or area where a person purposely places multiple beehives for bees to live in. The apiary may be built to assist with farming, to collect honey, or both. An apiary is beneficial to the farmland that surrounds it because it encourages bees to stay in the area. In turn, bees aid in pollination, which helps vegetables and fruit to grow. Typically, one beehive provides enough bees to pollinate one acre of crops.
10. In snooker, how much is the brown ball worth?

Answer: 4

Red = 1, yellow = 2, green = 3, brown = 4, blue = 5, pink = 6 and black = 7. It is generally believed that a Colonel in the British army conceived the game in Jubbulpore, India, in 1875. The game and rules weren't accepted by the "the billiards association" who were the governing body until 1900.
