Under the reign of Napoleon, France annexed parts of Catalonia and also Andorra in January of 1812, making the country effectively an integral part of France. At the end of 1813 Andorra once again became an independent state and it has remained so ever since. In the wake of the Spanish Civil War, French troops occupied Andorra as a protective measure but the country continued to function during that time.

Andorra doesn't have its own stamps. In fact, stamps of French Andorra are processed by La Poste while those of Spanish Andorra are distributed via the Correos postal service. Which service you choose to use is dependent on which language you speak. Therefore either of these provide international mail service.

Lady of Meritxell Day is a national holiday which is held on September 8. This is a Roman Catholic holiday of great importance to the Andorrans. The original Our Lady of Meritxell statue dates from the 12th century and depicts an apparition of the Virgin Mary.
