Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The chemical symbol for Potassium is "P"

Answer: False

It's actually "K", which stands for the Latin word "Kalium" which means alkali. Potassium is a highly reactive alkali metal found in Group 1 of the Periodic table. It oxidates very rapidly in air, and is very reactive with water.
2. Australia's capital in 1901 was situated in Melbourne.

Answer: True

Unfortunately for the people of Melbourne, it was later changed to Canberra because the framers of the Constitution didn't want to favor any one state, so they created the Australian Capital Territory. (ACT for short)
3. The Chinese phrase for "Quiz" is 'mi yu'.

Answer: True

Literally, 'mi yu' means, "Puzzle Language". The Chinese love to test each other on quizzes. For example: "In the blue sky, white flowers bloom. This one small, that one big. The darling moon likes to play hide and seek, hiding under the flowers."
The answer is cloud.
4. Up to this very day, the Tecumseh Curse has so-called 'caused' the death of every US Presidents who had been elected every 20 years. Includes Abraham Lincoln, John F. Kennedy and James Garfield.

Answer: False

The curse was 'broken' by Ronald Reagan (elected in 1980) who narrowly escaped assassination in his first term, an assassin's bullet missing his heart by one inch. But between 1840 and 1960, Presidents elected in 1840, 1860, 1880, 1900, 1920, 1940 and 1960 have died while in office. Legend says that Indian Chief Tecumseh pronounced this curse while sitting for a painting.
5. "The Fugitive" starring Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones, was based on a TV series of the same name.

Answer: True

The movie was released in 1993 and became and instant blockbuster. Set mainly in the city of Chicago, "The Fugitive" is about a successful surgeon who gets wrongly convicted and sentenced to death for the murder of his wife. He eventually manages to escape and sets out to discover the truth while dodging the US Marshals who are hunting him. Tommy Lee Jones actually won a best actor "Oscar" for his portrayal of US Marshal Samuel Gerrard.
6. Laos' capital city is Vientiane.

Answer: True

Laos is, literally, a 'strip' of a country located in Southern Asia. It is covered in rain-forest and is home to many endangered animal and plant species. It used to be part of the French Empire until its independence in 1949, when it became a communist state just like its neighbor, Vietnam.
7. In the current television series "24", terrorists have committed (or attempted to commit) the following atrocities: Shoot down Air Force One, assassinate a presidential candidate, detonate a nuclear bomb, release a lethal virus, release a nerve gas in a shopping center and kidnap the Secretary of Defense.

Answer: True

Spread out over 5 seasons, the terrorists in "24" have managed to do all of that except assassinate the presidential candidate, thanks to the actions of the hero, Jack Bauer, played by Keifer Sutherland, who has won a Golden Globe and an Emmy for his performance.
8. Without using a calculator, the square root of 12345678987654321 is 111111111

Answer: True

It's actually very interesting math: 1x1=1, 11x11=121, 111x111=12321... and so on until 111111111 squared. It's basically just listing the numbers from 1 to 9 then back to 1, depending on how many 1's you multiply together.
9. "The Lord of the Rings" Trilogy was filmed entirely in New Zealand.

Answer: True

New Zealand is a small country in the Southern Hemisphere, just below Australia. It consists of two islands: North and South. Peter Jackson, the director of the trilogy, is New Zealand born and bred, as is most of the crew. The only main New Zealand actors in the trilogy are Lawrence Makoare (Witch King and Gothmog) and Karl Urban (Eomer).
10. In Organic Chemistry, saturated compounds are those that contain only single bonds.

Answer: True

An example of this would be the alkane group, which has a formula of C(n)H(2n+2). The covalent bonds between the carbon atoms are single bonds. Alkenes and Alkynes are known as 'unsaturated compounds' because they contain double and triple bonds respectively.
