Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Most newer vehicles use two-pronged automotive fuses to protect electrical systems from overload. How many amperes is a green colored fuse rated at?

Answer: 30

The fuses are colored differently, depicting the amp range of the fuse. For example, a five amp fuse would be colored amber, while a red fuse would reflect a 7.5 rating, green identifies 30 amps, etc. A five amp fuse would protect small drawing electrical systems such as a license plate light and instrument panel lighting, while a 30 amp fuse would protect a heavy-use circuit such as an air conditioning system. Checking a fuse is an easy step for a car owner in troubleshooting an electrical problem with a vehicle.

In most cases, vehicle owners who do not know this, costs the owner a troubleshooting fee for a mechanic to change it, and could cost in excess of a day's pay. Located in the vehicle fuse box, there is a little visible metal strip inside a fuse, that when melted due to overload, will cause the circuit to stop working.

It is a very easy owner-fix if they know this. One should also never replace a fuse with a different (or colored) amp rated fuse.
2. What is cyanoacrylate primarily used for?

Answer: Hardening a chemical found in adhesives

Super Glue would be a good example of a composite adhesive. This fast-setting adhesive contains more than one chemical, with the cyanoacrylate serving the purpose to dry quickly. It will bond human skin instantly. Many impatient model builders use these products instead of slow, air drying glues, to speed up the building process, and because most fast-setting adhesives will not turn yellow with age.
3. Only five U.S. flags have absolutely no variation of the shade of blue in them. Which of the following is one of them?

Answer: Alabama

The others listed all have solid blue backgrounds. The state of Alabama has a solid white background with a bold red X reaching to all four corners. The other states which have no variation of blue in their flags are California, New Mexico, Maryland, and Florida.
4. Which Major League baseball player caused baseball commissioners to create a rule, stating that players must run around the bases facing forward, because this player ran backwards during a home run?

Answer: Jimmy Piersall

The others were all great Major League memories, but none ever hit a home run in their career. In fact, pitcher Mark "The Bird" Fidrych, never had an at-bat in his career. After playing in only 29 games in the 1963 season with the Washington Senators, Piersall was traded to the New York Mets mid-season.

His only home run as a Met turned out to be his 100th career home run. He celebrated it by running around the bases backwards. The commissioner of baseball, along with many Major League managers were outraged over Piersall's 'presentation', then the new rule was created. Piersall played from 1950-1967 with the Red Sox, Indians, Senators, Mets, and Angels.

He retired with 104 career home runs.
5. What is the temperature of liquid oxygen?

Answer: -297 degrees F

Liquid oxygen is just gaseous oxygen in liquid form. It is used on aircraft breathing systems because oxygen in liquid form, is more concentrated than gaseous oxygen. For example, a sealed gallon-sized container of gaseous oxygen could be used to breath for 30 minutes, while the same sized container of liquid oxygen, once warmed, could be used for over three hours. Believe it or not, many Las Vegas casinos use liquid oxygen converted back to its gaseous state, and pump it through their ventilation systems to help keep gamblers awake. Alcohol use removes oxygen content from a person's blood, and the pure oxygen pushed throughout ventilation systems in casinos, helps replenish the oxygen in the human body to keep gamblers up and spending.
6. What is an expectorant?

Answer: A drug used to lessen chest congestion

Expectorants are used to break up excessive respiratory secretions, mucus, and other foreign debris in the lungs. Its goal is to make phlegm somewhat less sticky. This helps removal of this build up through the normal coughing process. Elixir is a common expectorant. Expectorants should not be used by pregnant women as many have been deemed a possible fetal hazard.
7. Who was the first President of the United States to die while in office by whichever means?

Answer: William H. Harrison

The others listed were all assassinated. President Lincoln, the United States' 16th President was assassinated on April 15, 1865. The 20th President, James Garfield, was shot in 1881. William McKinley, the 25th President was shot while in office and later died in 1901. William Henry Harrison was the ninth President of the United States.

He took over the position from Martin Van Buren, who served from 1837-1841. Harrison, nicknamed "Old Tippecanoe", and a member of the Whig party, fathered nine children of which only one lived past 50 years.

Although he died of a respiratory infection in less than one month of his office occupation, he was the oldest person to take the Presidency at the age of 68 (later surpassed by Ronald Reagan at 69).

His grandson, Benjamin Harrison, later became the 23rd President. After his death, his Vice President, John Tyler, took over the office and served out the term from 1841-1845.
8. If a person had ligyrophobia, what would they be experiencing?

Answer: A fear of loud noises

A phobia is an anxiety attack due to a fear of some sort. Ligyrophobia is defined as an abnormal and persistent irrational fear of loud noises. Symptoms typically include fast breathing, shortness of breath, sweating, irregular heartbeat, nausea, and an overall feeling of worthlessness, mostly leading to a panic attack due to loud long lasting noise. Hypnotherapy, a treatment which helps to de-program the subconscious that has been the birth of the fear, helps to place this into a reality, then the panic attacks will minimize a comeback.
9. What is a thermocouple?

Answer: A device which transfers heat energy into electrical energy

Thermocouples are found in a variety of applications. In one instance, thermocouples are components of homes that use solar energy. The heat collection is converted into electrical impulses and stored for future use. Heat energy converted to electrical charges was a major breakthrough to operating systems for space ventures such as the space shuttle.
10. Which of the following movies did Tom Hanks play a major role in?

Answer: Turner and Hooch

'A Few Good Men' was cast with the great Jack Nicholson. Many for some unknown reason, confuse Tom Hanks with Michael Keaton, who starred in 'Batman' and 'Gung Ho'. Tom Hanks, an Academy Award winner for 'Forrest Gump' and star of many other motion pictures, also starred in 'Turner and Hooch' in 1989, although he did not win an Academy Award for this one.

In this movie, Tom Hanks was a police officer, who was teamed up with a repulsive dog named Hooch, who also was the only witness to a murder. Mare Winningham also starred in this comedy, action, suspense movie.
