The Big Red One is the nickname of the United States Army's First Infantry Division, so-called because the shoulder patch worn by members is a red numeral one. The First is the oldest continuously serving Regular Army division. Fuller directed the shooting of his own script. He was awarded the Silver Star, the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart for his service.

Answer: Red Rocks

The resulting album was entitled "A Night at Red Rocks" in honour of the remarkable location at which it was recorded. The amphitheatre is located just ten miles outside of Denver and seats up to 9000 people. The Moody Blues recorded their live concert with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra on 9 September 1992, the video of which was shown on PBS.

The red panda, named for its typical fur colour, is also called the lesser panda ('tho it is not a panda), the red bear-cat and the red cat-bear. It is the only extant species of the genus Ailurus and the family Ailuridae. Its relatives are weasels, skunks and raccoons: no bears, no cats.

A nickname for the red panda is fire fox ('tho it is not a fox, either); the web browser Firefox derived its name from this nickname, yet their logo looks more like a fox than a red panda.

Answer: Little Red Riding Hood

There are uncountable versions of Little Red Riding Hood (Little Red Cap, Rotkaeppchen) but they all involve an innocent young girl on a mission of mercy tricked by a Big Bad Wolf who wants to eat her (and her grandmother). There is an Italian version called "La finta nonna" ("The False Grandmother"). European folk tales are uniformly hard on wolves, see e.g.

The Three Little Pigs. The best-known versions are by Charles Perrault and by the Brothers Grimm, as well as the animated one by Walt Disney (1934).

In some versions, her cloak is magical. In some, her grandmother is not eaten but locked in the closet, for later consumption. In some version, the wolf eats her but in others the woodsman enters just in time to save her (and grandmother's) life. Red Riding Hood is a principal in Stephen Sondheim's "Into the Woods" (1987).

Paul Neal "Red" Adair (1915-2004) was a Texan and WWII US Army bomb-disposal expert who developed an international reputation for fighting and capping oil well fires on land and at sea. He and his company fought over 2000 fires. They extinguished a burning oil rig off Rio de Janeiro, the Piper Alpha oil rig in the North Sea, and, at age 75, the oil-well fires started in Kuwait by Saddam Hussein at the end of his occupation.

When algae, a form of phytoplankton, blooms rapidly, it may colour the surface of the water in which it is growing red or brown or pink or green. Some of these single-cell organisms produce toxins; some consume most of the oxygen in the water. Many result in the death of fish, shellfish, birds and other marine creatures.

The common name for these events is red tide, even 'tho not all are red and none is dependent upon the tide.

Red Hat is well known for its enterprise operating system called Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Its share of the market was increased by its purchase of JBoss. The company, with offices around the world, offers storage, platforms, middleware, training and consulting, among other products and services.

The company logo -- the head of "Shadowman" in black and white wearing a red fedora -- is iconic ... which is pretty much what you want a logo to be.

Answer: The Masque of the Red Death

Poe's 1842 story "The Masque of the Red Death" posits a deadly plague without identifying the specific disease involved. Seeking to avoid the contagion, Prince Prospero invites "a thousand hale and light-hearted friends from among the knights and dames of his court" to a cloistered party.

A mysterious figure appears, dressed in a cloak and mask; the guests seize it and find the costume "untenanted by any tangible form." Roger Corman adapted the story to a film starring Vincent Price in 1964.

Answer: informal extrajudicial punishment

In military parlance, Code Red refers to punishment imposed outside of the usual channels of discipline, usually by the offender's peers. Another name for Code Red is a 'blanket party" in which the victim's head is covered with his blanket while others pummel him for his offenses against the group. Such informal discipline results in a death in "A Few Good Men." The U.S. military branches all enforce strict prohibitions of this practice.

Answer: The Red Sea

The Red Sea is also known as the Erythreaean Sea. It is a salt water inlet connecting the Gulf of Aden and the Arabian Sea to the south and the Suez Canal to the north, except that the Suez Canal wasn't there when Moses and the Jews crossed the Red Sea. The Romans called it the Mare Rubrum. It is big, covering around 170,000 square miles.
