Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. English ventriloquist Keith Harris was generally seen on stage and screen with his best known creation, the green duck, which shared a name with the famous aviator shown in the picture. What was this duck's name?

Answer: Orville

The picture shows the bust of Orville Wright which can be seen, along with a similar bust of his brother Wilbur, at the Wright Brothers National Memorial in North Carolina. The Wright brothers made the first powered airplane flight near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina on 17th December 1903.

Keith Harris (21st September 1947 - 28th April 2015) and Orville released "Orville's Song" in 1982, and it reached number four in the UK singles chart.
2. The Royal Opera House in the picture is located in the capital city of the only country in the world beginning with the letter 'O'. Can you name this country?

Answer: Oman

The Sultanate of Oman, as it is officially called, is located on the southeastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula. Its capital city Muscat is also the largest city in the country. It is home to the Royal Opera House, which was officially opened on 12th October 2011, and is Oman's premier venue for musical arts and culture.
3. An angle that is greater than 90 degrees but less than 180 degrees, like the one shown, is referred to as what?

Answer: Obtuse

Apologies for my rather crude drawing ... hopefully it didn't prevent you from getting the right answer!

An acute angle is an angle that is less than 90 degrees. A right angle is an angle that is 90 degrees exactly. An obtuse angle is an angle that is greater than 90 degrees, but less than 180 degrees. A straight angle is an angle that is 180 degrees exactly. A reflex angle is an angle that is greater than 180 degrees.
4. OPEC was established in Baghdad, Iraq on 10-14 September 1960 and has had its headquarters in Vienna, Austria since 1965. What does the 'O' in OPEC stand for?

Answer: Organization

OPEC is the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, which seeks to ensure a stable oil market with fair prices for consumers, steady income for producers, and a fair return on capital for investors.

OPEC was founded by the first five members - Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Venezuela - during the Baghdad Conference held in September 1960. In January 2017, thirteen nations comprised OPEC: the original five, plus Algeria, Angola, Ecuador, Gabon, Libya, Nigeria, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates.
5. What is the name of the battery-operated game that requires players to remove items such as 'Bread Basket' and 'Water on the Knee' from the game board without setting off the buzzer?

Answer: Operation

A variant of the electrified wire loop game often played at fairgrounds, "Operation" was devised in 1964 by university student John Spinello, who sold his rights to the game to Milton Bradley. The company produced the first commercial version of the game in 1965.

The "patient" from whom players have to extract such "ailments" as 'Adam's Apple', 'Broken Heart', and 'Spare Ribs' is nicknamed "Cavity Sam", and his red light-bulb nose lights up if a player should inadvertently touch the metallic tweezers against the metal edge of the opening when trying to extract an "ailment".
6. In anatomy, what is the name of the cavity or socket of the skull in which the eye and its appendages are situated?

Answer: Orbit

Yes, the orbit is the cavity in the skull of a vertebrate that contains the eye, also sometimes referred to as the eye socket.

The occiput is the back of the head or skull; an ossicle is a very small bone, especially one of those in the middle ear; and the otolith is a small oval calcareous body in the inner ear which is involved in sensing gravity and movement.
7. David Jason starred as Derek 'Del Boy' Trotter in "Only Fools And Horses". One of the most memorable scenes of this sitcom is shown in this photo, but which of these other British 'O' shows did David also star in?

Answer: Open All Hours

Born David John White on 2nd February 1940, David Jason is one of the UK's most recognizable and best-loved actors. Perhaps best known for playing Derek 'Del Boy' Trotter in "Only Fools And Horses", David has also played Granville in "Open All Hours", Pop Larkin in "The Darling Buds of May", and DI Jack Frost in "A Touch of Frost".
8. Which of the following 'O' animals is the odd one out, as it does NOT belong to the Bovidae family?

Answer: Okapi

The okapi is a member of the Giraffidae family, which is a family of ruminant artiodactyl (even fingered/toed) mammals that consists of just two living genera - the okapi and the giraffe. Although its striped legs may suggest it is more related to the zebra than the giraffe, the okapi actually shares a number of common features with its fellow family member, including a long dark-coloured tongue, lobed canine teeth, and ossicones (horns covered in skin).
9. Which of the following two-letter words beginning with 'O' can be added to the item pictured to make a cockerel or rooster that has been castrated to improve the flesh for use as food?

Answer: On

The picture shows a (baseball) cap => cap + on = capon.

The absence of sexual hormones is the reason that capon meat is better (more tender and flavorful) than rooster meat, which tends to be quite gamy. Another "benefit" of caponization (the process of making a rooster into a capon via castration) is that capons are less aggressive than roosters, and therefore are easier to handle.
10. My friend's mother is suffering from a disease that has the same name as the sign of the zodiac represented by the creature pictured. Which of the following 'O' people does she visit to help her with her treatment?

Answer: Oncologist

The crab represents Cancer, which is the fourth sign of the zodiac and is the birth sign for those born between 21st June to 22nd July.

Oncology is the branch of medicine that deals with the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of cancer, with medical professionals in this area being called oncologists.

An ophthalmologist is a specialist in the anatomy, physiology and diseases of the eyeball, an orthopaedic surgeon is a specialist in conditions involving the musculoskeletal system, and an orthodontist is a specialist in the field of dentistry, primarily involved in the diagnosis, prevention and correction of malpositioned teeth and the jaws.
