Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which town, created by Royal Charter from King John in 1200, is the County Town of Suffolk?

Answer: Ipswich

Ipswich is the County Town of Suffolk. It is a large town with a population in excess of 117,000 and stands at the head of the Orwell estuary.

Many people mistakenly think that Bury St Edmunds is the administrative centre because there is a cathedral there. The Port of Felixstowe is the largest container port in Britain. The town of Newmarket, the home of British Horse Racing, is right on the Suffolk/Cambridge border.
2. Name the Suffolk seaside town where Adnams Ale is brewed.

Answer: Southwold

Southwold is a pleasant seaside town on the Suffolk Heritage Coast and is home to the Solebay Brewery where Adnams Ale has been produced since 1872.
3. Mary Tudor was staying in Suffolk when she received news that her brother had died and it was from this place that she set out for London to claim the throne as Queen Mary I. Which Suffolk fortification was briefly Mary's home?

Answer: Framlingham Castle

Framlingham Castle was built in the 12th century. King Edward VI gave it to his sister Mary in 1553, but after she ascended the throne herself, she returned the castle and its lands to the Duke of Norfolk. The castle is currently owned by English Heritage.

Orford Castle was also built in the 12th century (by Henry II) but the keep is all that still stands today. The first Clare Castle was built around 1070 and was added to during the next century. The ruins of the 12th century stone keep still stand within Clare Castle Country Park. The first Languard Fort was built during the reign of Henry VIII. It has been rebuilt or modified many times since and stands on Languard Point, the most southerly place in Suffolk.
4. The most easterly point in England is in Suffolk, but in which town?

Answer: Lowestoft

Lowestoft is a seaside town, close to the Norfolk border, in an area known as 'The Sunrise Coast'. Lowestoft Ness, which juts out into the North Sea, is officially the most easterly point in Britain.
5. Freston Tower, which was built in the sixteenth century, stands on the south bank of which Suffolk river?

Answer: River Orwell

Freston Tower was built around 1578/79, although no one really knows why or what for. It is six stories high, but so narrow that there is only one room on each floor.
6. The National Horseracing Museum is located in which Suffolk town?

Answer: Newmarket

Newmarket is home to, among other things, two racecourses, the National Horseracing Museum, the British Racing School and Palace House which was once the residence of King Charles II, whose interest in horseracing is well documented.
7. In the 1930s, a 1300 year old ship-burial of a Saxon warrior king was found in a field in Suffolk. Where?

Answer: Sutton Hoo

There is now a Visitor Centre at Sutton Hoo where some of the treasures of Rędwald, King of East Anglia may be seen.

Orford Ness is a nature reserve which was a bombing range and munitions testing site from 1913 until the mid 1980s. Shotley Gate is near the tip of the Shotley Peninsula and from this point you can see both the Stour and Orwell estuaries and the busy ports of Harwich and Felixstowe. Monks Eleigh is one of many pretty Suffolk villages close to the ancient towns of Lavenham and Long Melford.
8. In which Suffolk town would you find the Abbey Gardens and the smallest pub in Britain?

Answer: Bury St Edmunds

Besides the Abbey Gardens and The Nutshell (Britain's smallest pub), Bury is also home to a cathedral, a couple of interesting museums and The Theatre Royal, one of the oldest purpose built theatres in Britain.
9. Which artist was born in the village of East Bergholt in 1776, and is best known for painting the landscape of the Stour Valley along the Suffolk/Essex border?

Answer: John Constable

The area around Dedham Vale and the Stour Valley is known as Constable Country after one of Suffolk's famous landscape painters. Some of his best known works, such as 'The Haywain' (1821) and 'Flatford Mill'(1814-15) feature his home county.

The other three all hail from Suffolk too; Thomas Gainsborough made his name painting portraits and Sir Alfred Munnings was an equestrian painter who lived at Dedham (in the heart of Constable Country) until his death in 1959. Thomas Churchyard was born at Melton in 1798 and painted in many different genres including landscapes and portraits.
10. Maggi Hambling's scallop sculpture sits on the beach between Aldeburgh and Thorpness as a tribute to which British composer?

Answer: Benjamin Britten

A Suffolk native, Britten was born at Lowestoft and died at Aldeburgh. Maggi Hambling's sculpture, which features a line from Britten's opera 'Peter Grimes' has caused some controversy locally and has unfortunately been vandalised a number of times.
