1. Which is the largest city in Yorkshire?

Answer: Leeds

Leeds is the largest city in Yorkshire.

It is home to St James's University hospital (one of the largest teaching hospitals in Europe) and the Royal Armouries.
2. How many steps do you need to climb up to reach Whitby Abbey?

Answer: 199

The 199 steps were originally made of wood and were changed to stone in 1774.

It is thought that the steps were used as a test of Christian faith for those who wished to worship at St Mary's Church (at the top of the hill).

Whitby is steeped in history. Captain James Cook was born in nearby Marton and Bram Stoker's "Dracula" story is set here.
3. Filey is a small coastal town situated between Scarborough and Bridlington. What is Filey Brigg?

Answer: A long narrow peninsula

The Brigg is about one mile from Filey and its cliffs are 20 metres high. They consist of many materials including pure limestone and pure sandstone. Visitors are advised to leave the Brigg at least two hours before high tide to ensure that they don't get cut off.

"Heartbeat" was based on the "Constable" books that were written by Nicholas Rhea, and ran from 1992 to 2010.

It followed the local constabulary as they carried out their duties in Ashfordly and nearby Aidensfield (Goathland).

At the start of the TV series PC Nick Rowan was played by Nick Berry.

Other regulars in the show included Derek Fowlds and Bill Maynard.

Answer: Skipton

Skipton is a market town and is an ideal place for visitors to stay if they are planning to explore the nearby Yorkshire Dales.

It is about 27 miles from Leeds and stands on the River Aire and Leeds-to-Liverpool canal.

There is a 12th century castle, a market (held three time per week) in the High Street) and plenty of shops.

The Embsay & Bolton Abbey Heritage Railway is a short distance away.

Answer: North Bay and South Bay

Scarborough,the oldest seaside resort in the UK, has two bays.

Visitors can walk (or take an open top bus ride) between the two bays along the Marine Drive.

The South Bay is home to the harbour, RNLI Station, shops, bars, cafes and amusement arcades.

The North Bay has Peasholm Park where, in summer, there are miniature naval battles on the lake).

A short walk away is the Sea Life Centre, the Open Air Theatre and the Alpermare Water Park.

Mother Shipton's Cave is in Knaresborough, North Yorkshire

Besides the cave, there is a Petrfying well (also known as a dropping well).

Any items that are placed in the well water (which is rich in sulphates and carbonates) become encrusted.

Many of these items that have been encrusted are on display.

Ursula Southeil (Old Mother Shipton), a prophetess, is thought to have been born in a cave (now known as Mother Shipton's cave) in 1488.
