Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Approximately what percentage of the population is left-handed?

Answer: 10 percent

Estimates indicate that approximately one in ten people is left handed. Studies also indicate that left-handedness is more common in males than females.
2. On what date is International Lefthanders Day celebrated?

Answer: August 13

Lefthanders International designated August 13 as International Lefthanders Day. International Lefthanders Day has been an annual celebration beginning in 1976. One aim of the day is to raise awareness of left-handedness and the challenges faced by lefties living in a right-handed world.
3. Which regular every day item is typically designed to favor the left-handed user?

Answer: None of these

Each of these items normally favor the right-handed user (though there are some scissors designed just for the left-handed user). The typical computer mouse is curved to fit the right hand. The slant of the blades and handle of scissors often make them difficult for left-handers to use.

A manual can opener is designed to be held in the left hand while the right hand turns the key which is awkward for a lefty.
4. Which term is NOT used to describe the left or left-handedness?

Answer: Starboard

Starboard is the right side of a ship. Sinister was the Latin word for left. In French, gauche, and German links or linkisch, are left but are also often used to mean awkward or clumsy. In many languages "right" stands for correctness as well as authority and justice, while "left" is sinister, clumsy, unlucky, or devious.
5. Which left-handed U.S. President had a left-handed Vice President?

Answer: Gerald Ford

Lefty Nelson Rockefeller was the U.S. Vice President from December 19, 1974 to January 20, 1977. Other left-handed Vice Presidents were George H.W. Bush (Vice President to Ronald Reagan) and Henry Wallace (Vice President to Franklin Roosevelt).
6. The term "southpaw" used to describe a lefty probably originated with what sport?

Answer: Baseball

It's widely accepted that the term originated in the game of baseball. Ballparks are usually designed so that the right-handed batter is facing east and the afternoon sun isn't shining in his eyes. This means that left-handed pitchers are throwing from the south side.
7. The standard English-language keyboard favors left-handers.

Answer: True

The standard "QWERTY" keyboard has more of the most commonly used letters on the left side, thus the left hand does more of the actual typing. This was originally done because mechanical typewriters would often jam if the typist hit the keys too quickly. Using the left hand more would slow a typist down.
8. In which sport is left-handed play prohibited?

Answer: Polo

There is a written rule in polo that states that a player must not hold a stick with the left arm. Jai-Alai also prohibits left-handed play. While field hockey does not specifically prohibit left-handed play, it does prohibit hitting the ball with the back of a stick and also prohibits left-handed sticks.
9. In the 1992 U.S. Presidential Election, which candidate was NOT left-handed?

Answer: None of these

All three major candidates on the Presidential ballot in 1992 were left-handed! Clinton was the seventh left-handed President of the U.S. Others include James Garfield, Herbert Hoover, Harry Truman, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, and George H.W. Bush.
10. Which golf superstar's nickname is Lefty?

Answer: Phil Mickelson

Though he's a left-handed golfer, Phil is actually right-handed. He first began "golfing" by mirroring his father's swing and could not be persuaded to play golf right-handed.
