Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following rock bands won the Grammy for Album of the Year in the 1988 awards?

Answer: U2

The album was "The Joshua Tree", which included the hit singles "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" and "With Or Without You". Their albums as well as their concert tours has solidified U2 as one of the top rock bands in the world.
2. You overhear a group of people talking about their experience with K2. What are they talking about?

Answer: a mountain

The majestic mountain is located in the Himalayan range in Pakistan and China. It is the second highest mountain on earth; behind only Mt. Everest, soaring to the heavens at 28,251 feet.
3. What was the name of the 1971 breakthrough film by "Star Wars" director, George Lucas?

Answer: THX 1138

"THX 1138" chronicles the lives of two people living in a dystopian future where high level control is obtained by faceless android cops, and a mandatory regulated drug program. Robert Duvall starred as the main character. The other three were movies about military ships or submarines.
4. In the game of Bingo, which of the following would NOT be a legal number called out?

Answer: N30

The game is played on a 5x5 grid with numbers assigned to the letters in the word BINGO. In the B column you have the numbers 1-15. The I column goes from 16-30. The N column goes from 31-45. Under the G column you have 46-60. The O column goes from 61-75. Based on this, the number N30 is not legal; it would be I30 instead.
5. If you saw the "Star Wars" trilogy you would know that one of the robots (or droids as they were called) was named R2D2. But do you happen to know the name of the sci-fi movie from which George Lucas modeled R2D2 after?

Answer: Silent Running

In Silent Running (1972), Bruce Dern is living on a space station which focuses on growing trees in large greenhouses since the plant life on Earth has been destroyed. After killing his three colleagues who refuse to help save the trees, Dern uses the three robots (named after Donald Duck's nephews, Huey, Dewey and Louie) to save the trees. Lucas modeled R2D2 after these short robots for his film.
6. Which of the following military planes is the largest American cargo plane?

Answer: C-5

The C-5 is almost as long as a football field and is about 65 ft in height. Its sole purpose is to transport large military vehicles and equipment such as tanks, jeeps and even bombs to international military bases. The C-130 is used mainly for troop deployment but can also be used for paratroopers as well as other smaller cargo.

This is the type of transport that was used to bring the troops home from Vietnam in the late 70s. The C-141 carries a lot of cargo as well, and is also used for aerial supply drops in disaster areas whenever medical supplies were needed such as a flood, hurricane or earthquake.
7. You probably have heard of the multi-purpose lubricant known as WD-40, but do you happen to know what the 40 refers to?

Answer: it refers to the number of attempts needed to create the formula

In 1953, Norm Larsen was attempting to develop a formula that would prevent corrosion by displacing water. He created the formula on the 40th attempt, which was noted in his research notebook. Thus WD-40 was born. Today it has many uses, from dealing with squeaky doors to preventing tools from getting rusty.
8. In 1993, the reggae group UB40 recorded a remake of an Elvis Presley hit. Which Elvis hit was it?

Answer: (I Can't Help) Falling In Love With You

The song; which Elvis used in his movie "Blue Hawaii" (1961), became a hit all over again in 1993 as a reggae version. It was used in the 1992 Sharon Stone movie, "Sliver" and was UB40's biggest hit, remaining at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 list for seven weeks.
9. In the U.S. Navy, the aircraft carriers have names such as USS Enterprise, Yorktown, or Eisenhower. They also have a classification number on the hull such as CV-65 (USS Enterprise) or CV-67 (USS John F Kennedy). What does the CV stand for?

Answer: Carrier Aviation

Since the carriers were in essence Naval airports, the term Carrier Aviation was used to designate the carriers from every other type of vessel. Since the cruise ships were already classified as CA they had to come up with another class code. So they used the second letter in aviation, thus giving us CV.
10. The doctor is about to give you 10cc of blood. What does the cc stand for?

Answer: cubic centimeters

Blood is measured in cubic centimeters which is of course the metric system. The human body contains about 5 liters of blood.
