Born in 1814, Eugene POTTiER's life was quite unmemorable except for the revolutionary days in 1871 when Paris declared itself a commune and he was elected a member. After only 2 months the commune was crushed and he had to flee, writing his famous poem on the run. He died in 1887, music was added to the verses by Pierre Degeyter in 1888. Here it is:

The year was 1905 and the mountain was the Ballon d'Alsace. Rene POTTiER aka "the butcher" (in the early days of cycling many racers were known by their non-cycling profession) immortalized himself as the first mountain king in cycling. Sadly he died one year later by hanging himself, according to rumour because of an unfaithful wife.

Until 1898 there were no unincorporated territories (since it's basically an euphemism for colonies), but the USA has several of them today, organised (like Puerto Rico or Guam) and unorganised (like Jarvis Island, Johnston Atoll etc.).
