1. I live in Durban, South Africa. As I was born, bred and raised in South Africa, from South African parents, there is a larger than 95% chance that I am black.

Answer: False

According to the population estimate report for 2006 by Statistics South Africa, 9.2% of the population is White, 2.5% is Asian, 8.9% is Coloured (an official SA race group) and 79.8% are Black. Most of the non-Black population were born in South Africa.
2. Durban is a large South African city, which means that we have access to electricity, water and sanitation to our all homes.

Answer: False

Many houses in the townships and squatter camps do not yet have electricity, water or sanitation. The backlog is being addressed, and since 2001 electricity and water connections backlogs have been halved. Housing remains an ongoing problem, and until access to housing has been fully addressed, the other problems will not be resolved.
3. Only rich, white South Africans have maids and gardeners. These workers are exploited and unprotected by labour law.

Answer: False

Most middle to upper income households employ maids and gardeners, regardless of their population group. All employers of domestic workers have to have a signed contract in place with their servant, and have to give paid leave and sick leave and must contribute to unemployment insurance.

There are a few people who do exploit their domestic workers, but they are the minority. For most people, their maid is an important member of the household.
