Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Over the second weekend in March, in Sweetwater, Texas, a great round-up takes place. Souvenirs are sold and a good time is (we hope) had by all, but what critters are the locals rounding up, exactly?

Answer: Rattlesnakes

A similar event takes place in January in Whigham, Georgia, but the Texans claim theirs to be the world's largest event of its kind. The Texans add a cook-off of rattlesnake delicacies to their bill.
2. Two completely bizarre shrines to the American car (that I know of) exist in the States. The one, Cadillac Ranch, near Amarillo, Texas, features ten classic Caddies buried halfway in the ground. The second is Carhenge, which sounds about the same. Where is Carhenge?

Answer: Alliance, Nebraska

Carhenge, of course, was inspired by the much, much older mystic ruins of the British isles, called Stonehenge. The Brits have their druids, the Yanks have their mechanics - whatever blows your hair back, I guess...
3. A question most Americans should be able to answer with ease but which may confuse us foreigners: every year in Milwaukee, Wisconsin the Annual H.O.G. Rally takes place in Wisconsin State Fair Park. What exactly does one ride at a H.O.G. rally?

Answer: Harley Davidson

H.O.G. stands for Harley Owners' Group.
4. What would a US counter-culture tour be without a mention of The King? What is the site of the first official reported Elvis sighting after his death?

Answer: Felspauch's Supermarket, Michigan

Elvis was reportedly spotted at checkout two shortly after his death. The supermarket is in Vicksburg, Michigan.
5. The Great Potato Marathon falls every year on the second of May. Contestants play a sort of egg-and-spoon race carrying a potato - where does this weird and wonderful event take place?

Answer: Idaho

Eagle, Idaho, to be exact. I like this festival as it falls on my birthday.
6. Every fall/winter the citizens of Chandler, Arizona, gather for the Annual Tumbleweed Lighting Ceremony. In which month does this event take place?

Answer: December

I have it on good authority that it's warm over Christmas in Arizona.
7. Huntington, Indiana, is home to the only museum dedicated to an American Vice-President. Who is this worthy?

Answer: Dan Quayle

This questionable edifice is styled The Dan Quayle Center and Museum.
8. Annually on Shrove Tuesday the Liberal Pancake Race takes place. Contestants must flip constantly as they make their way around a 415 yard lap. Why is it called the 'Liberal' Pancake Race?

Answer: It takes place in a town called Liberal

Yes - unfortunately the answer's as mundane as a place-name! When I first heard about this event, to my great delight, I assumed it was a political thing. I was hugely disappointed to discover it takes its name from its home: Liberal, Kansas. (I should have known: Liberals don't tend to hold rallies on religious holidays, do they?)
9. Only the USA would have such a theme park! Where would you find Dollywood, dedicated to a blonde actress?

Answer: Great Smoky Mountains, Tennessee

God bless Dolly - she wrote 'I Will Always Love You' and sang the only decent version of it yet recorded.
10. We're back in Texas - where we started! In February and March, the Texans (presumably in preparation for the Great Round-Up over in Sweetwater) of Alpine gather for a mass poetry reading. What type of poetry is celebrated at this literary convention?

Answer: Cowboy verse

Yup, The Texas Cowboy Poetry Gathering is quite an institution, apparently.
