Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Arnold Aardvark lives quite happily on the savannah in Africa. As he meanders merrily through his days, he sometimes meets up with a creature known as an aardwolf - what sort of creature is this?

Answer: An insectivorous relative of the hyena

Also sometimes called a "maanhaar jackal", aardwolves are somewhat smaller than their hyena cousins. Their main food source is termites, just like the aardvarks, and they are found in the wild in eastern and southern Africa.
2. Returning home from his daily constitutional, Arnold Aardvark passes close by a kraal. Which of these things is he most likely to see there?

Answer: Domestic cattle penned up

A kraal is an enclosure within the precincts of an African village, where the cattle are penned to keep them safe from predators.
Sometimes the whole village is referred to as the kraal, but the strictest sense of the word is only used for the animal enclosure.
The word boma is also used in some parts of Africa, to describe the animal pen, but a boma is traditionally made of thorn bushes.
3. Arnold Aardvark performs a salaam to greet his wife as he gets home from a hard day's work. He settles down in front of the television for a pleasant evening viewing sports, and is intrigued to see that one of the players is named Ephraim Salaam. Having played for teams named Broncos, Jaguars, and Lions, (among others) what is Salaam's sport?

Answer: American Football

The word salaam comes from the Arabic language, and means "peace". It is a low bow performed while placing the right palm on the forehead. It is a common greeting in the middle east and Asia.
Ephraim Salaam began his footballing career at College when he played for San Diego State, before entering the NFL Draft in 1998 and making his debut with the Atlanta Falcons.
4. On Arnold Aardvark's birthday, his mother sends him a most intriguing wadmaal object. Which of these options is the most likely use for something made of wadmaal?

Answer: Keeping warm in winter weather

Wadmaal is a thick cloth made from wool, and has been used to make warm winter garments in northern Europe since the Middle Ages. The word itself is of Old Norse origin.
5. Arnold Aardvark decides to give his wife a break and take the little Aardvarks out for a picnic. They decide to visit a nearby maar and take in the scenery there on their outing. What view would you expect if you were at a maar?

Answer: A rocky volcanic crater, possibly filled with water

Maars are relatively shallow volcanic craters, usually containing a lake, that are formed when water from the ground above breaks through into an erupting crater and explodes outwards as it meets the superheated lava or magma.
One of the best known African maars is Lake Nyos which is in Cameroon.
6. On their family outing, Arnold Aardvark and family decide to have delicious braai, or barbecued, termites for lunch. Are they alone in enjoying braai - is it true or false that South Africa has a National Braai Day each year?

Answer: True

In South Africa, Braai Day is on September 26th, and coincides with Heritage Day. Events are promoted using the slogan "Braai4Heritage" and have taken place annually since 2005.
7. The traditional laager with circled wagons holding back hordes of attacking enemies is quite common in historical films set in Africa. They were formed for defense, by the Voortrekker families, as they headed out to find land to farm. What colours were the Voortrekker flag they flew over the laager?

Answer: Red and Blue

The Voortrekker Flag is a red saltire on a blue ground (like the Scottish flag of St. Andrew but in red and blue rather than blue and white).
The "Great Trek" north and east into Africa from Cape Town took place in the late 1830s and early 1840s. The travails of the people who made the epic journeys are commemorated in the massive Voortrekker Monument just outside Pretoria. The site has been declared a South African National Heritage Site.
8. Sometimes a man (or aardvark!) just needs a bit of time away from the stresses of work and family life. Arnold takes a trip to Europe, to spend some time at a haaf - what does he do there?

Answer: Deep Sea Fishing

A haaf is a deep sea fishing ground, in the sea around the Shetland Islands off the northern tip of Scotland.
The roots of the word come from Old English and Old Norse.
9. On his way home from his trip to Europe, Arnold Aardvark stops off to view Hawksbill turtles at a beautiful beach on Maalhosmadulu Atoll. It is part of the administrative district with the coded letter designation Baa - which country is it in?

Answer: The Maldives

The islands which make up the Baa administrative district of the Maldives are collectively known as Southern Maalhosmadulu Atoll. As well as Maalhosmadulu Atoll, Goifulhafehendhu Atoll and Fasduthere Atoll are part of Baa.
The area has over seventy islands, but only thirteen of them are permanently inhabited.
In 2011, the Baa district was declared a World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO and all the wildlife and flora is now protected.
10. Methaqualone is a sedative drug that has been around since the 1960s. It was widely used as a tranquiliser and anti-insomniac prescription, but nowadays is illegal in many countries. By which of these names is methaqualone better known?

Answer: Quaaludes

Quaaludes were widely used as a recreational drug in the 1960s and 70s, but by the 1980s its manufacture, prescription, and illegal use, were widely controlled and restricted in many countries.
It is still quite common in South Africa, where it is comparatively cheap and easily available, despite efforts by the authorities to stamp out its use.
