Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Aida is not only a famous Verdi opera, it is also a type of fabric used in which hobby?

Answer: Cross stitch

Aida fabric is an open weave material suitable for cross stitch. It comes in various counts (number of threads per inch) which makes it suitable for various thicknesses of thread, from a wool to a fine cotton.
2. Jeffrey Archer, author of 'Kane and Abel' and 'The Clifton Chronicles' was imprisoned in 2001 for which crime?

Answer: Perjury

Jeffrey Archer became bankrupt in 1974 when he was caught up in a fraudulent investment scheme and took up writing to work his way out of debt. He sued the 'Daily Star' for libel after the tabloid accused him of paying a prostitute for sex rather than the donation it was supposed to be.

After the 1987 trial he was found not guilty, but in 2000 he was charged with perjury and perverting the course of justice in that trial. Consequently he was found guilty and served two years in prison.
3. Which infamous site in Poland will forever be associated with Nazi war crimes?

Answer: Auschwitz

The Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland was annexed by Nazi Germany during WWII. Polish political prisoners first arrived at the camp in 1940, but by the following year it had become an extermination camp for the mass gassing of Jews and other minority groups. It is estimated that more than one million people were killed there during the war.

Camp Ashcan was an allied-run POW camp in Luxembourg.
4. Not an operatic solo but a currency. Which country adopted the ariary as its currency in 2005?

Answer: Madagascar

The Malagasy ariary (MGA) formally replaced the Malagasy franc in 2005. Prior to this they used both the franc and the ariary. The ariary was first introduced in 1961 and was equal to 5 Malagasy francs. There are five iraimbilanja per ariary, so they are equal in value to the old franc.
5. While not the most populous city, what is the capital of the United Arab Emirates?

Answer: Abu Dhabi

The United Arab Emirates is a federation of seven emirates, of which Abu Dhabi is the capital. The city of Abu Dhabi is the second most populous city in the emirate of Abu Dhabi, the most populous city being Dubai. Abu Dhabi is situated on an island very close to the mainland and is the centre of UAE politics and industry.
6. Because they often travel groups of about 12, which Australian bird takes its name from the followers of Jesus Christ?

Answer: Apostlebird

The apostlebird (Struthidea cinerea), also known as the grey jumper, is a native Australian bird found mostly along the inland of the east coast. They normally travel in groups of about 12 birds which is why they were named after the 12 apostles.

The galah is one of my favourite birds, not just for its name, but also for its pink and grey plumage.
7. Famous for his designs including the Dancing House in Prague and a titular tower in Germany, which Canadian-born American architect has spawned the 'Bilbao Effect' for innovative architectural design?

Answer: Frank Gehry

Frank Gehry is an innovative architect who is responsible for some of the most striking buildings ever constructed. In 1989 he was awarded the Pritzker Architecture Prize for 'talent, vision and commitment'. After the Gehry-designed Guggenheim museum was opened in Bilbao, Spain in 1997, it became a popular tourist attraction, revitalising the economy of the region.

Frank Lloyd Wright certainly deserved to be one of the incorrect answers, however, since he designed the Guggenheim Museum in New York, I thought including his name could lead to confusion (and correction notices!).
8. Which British singer, known for her hits 'Someone like You' and 'Hello', also wrote and performed the theme song for the 2012 James Bond film, the 23rd in the franchise?

Answer: Adele

'Skyfall' won both the Oscar and Golden Globe for best original song. Reminiscent of Shirley Bassey's performances, it has been hailed as a return to the days of majestic Bond themes.

Adele's first album '19' was released in 2008 and reached number one on the UK Albums Chart. Her second album '21' and third album '25' both debuted at number one and reached number one globally.
9. Aldebaran, an orange giant some 65 light years away, is known as the eye in which Constellation?

Answer: Taurus

Also known as Alpha Tauri, Aldebaran is the brightest star in the Taurus constellation and gives the eye of the bull its fiery colour.
10. With the body of a man and head of a jackal, who is the Egyptian god of mummification?

Answer: Anubis

Anubis, with a human body and canine head is possibly the most recognised and ancient Egyptian god, yet plays almost no part in Egyptian myth. In very early myth he was the lord of the underworld but was later replaced by Osiris. Now he is known as the god of mummification and transports souls to Osiris.
