Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Scrooge McDuck
Answer: Disney character
Also known as Uncle Scrooge, the popular Disney cartoon skinflint is the maternal uncle of Donald Duck. Created in 1947, this elderly Glaswegian businessduck has grown from being a bit-part character to one of Disney's most enduring personalities.
2. Jemima Puddle-Duck
Answer: Book
'The Tale of Jemima Puddle-Duck' is a children's book written and illustrated by the English author Beatrix Potter in 1908. The story follows the trials and tribulations of the aforementioned duck as she tries to find a safe spot in which to hatch her precious eggs.
3. Five Little Ducks
Answer: Playground song
'Five little ducks went swimming one day,
Over the hill and far away.
Mamma duck said: "Quack, quack, quack, quack!"
And only four little ducks came back.'
The song carries on in this vein until it gets to one little duck, but don't worry, there IS a happy ending!
4. Disco Duck
Answer: Novelty Song
Performed by Rick Dees and His Cast of Idiots, 'Disco Duck' (1976) is an infuriatingly catchy tune which became a hit in the United States and in the UK. Dees was a disc jockey in Memphis when he recorded this song, a satire of the Disco craze that was sweeping the nation at the time.
5. Duck Soup
Answer: Film
'Duck Soup' (1933) is a comedy starring the irrepressible Marx Brothers. Although, admittedly, it is chaotic and irreverent, the subject matter - war, dictatorship and religion - is serious and still relevant today.
6. The Duck and the Kangaroo
Answer: Poem
Written by the master of wonderful nonsense, Edward Lear (1812 - 1888)'The Duck and the Kangaroo' is a five-stanza poem about the conversation between the two animals - the former expressing its jealousy that it can't bound around the world, unlike its marsupial friend.
'Said the Duck to the Kangaroo,
"Good gracious! how you hop!
Over the fields and the water too,
As if you never would stop!
My life is a bore in this nasty pond,
And I long to go out in the world beyond!
I wish I could hop like you!"
Said the Duck to the Kangaroo.'
7. Duck, Duck, Goose
Answer: Game
A children's party favourite, 'Duck, duck, goose' is a lot of fun, and simple to play. There are at least three versions of this game, the most popular being where the player chosen to be 'it' walks around a circle of seated children, lightly tapping each one on the head whilst saying 'duck, duck, duck...' until they randomly proclaim a player to be a 'goose'. The 'goose' must then jump up and try to tag 'it' before 'it' makes it back to the vacated space.
8. Anaheim Ducks
Answer: Ice Hockey Team
The Anaheim Ducks are an American ice hockey team based in California. Named after a 1990s Disney film franchise, 'The Mighty Ducks', the team is a member of the Pacific Division of the Western Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL).
9. Flying Duck Orchid
Answer: Flower
Caleana major, also known as the flying duck orchid, is a unique terrestrial flower found in Australia. If you're not familiar with this plant, I urge you to look it up - its resemblance to a duck in flight is truly amazing!
