Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the Monty Python sketch, "Albatross", once the ice cream girl played by John Cleese has sold her albatrosses, what does she try to sell next?

Answer: Gannet On A Stick

The theatre goer, played by Terry Jones, eventually buys two albatross for a bargain nine pence each, after asking questions such as "What flavour is it?" and "Do I get wafers with it?". There are 22 flavours, sorry, I mean species of albatross in the wild, none of which come with wafers.
2. Which character from a Charles Portis novel has been played by John Wayne, Warren Oates and Jeff Bridges?

Answer: Rooster Cogburn

Rooster Cogburn was a U.S. marshal who first appeared in the 1968 novel by Portis, "True Grit". Wayne played him in the movie of the same name in 1969 and the follow up "Rooster Cogburn" in 1975. Oates played the part in 1978 in the TV movie, "True Grit: A Further Adventure", while Bridges landed the part in the 2010 remake of the original, for which he was Oscar nominated. Coincidentally, the part of Cogburn in 1969 won John Wayne his only Oscar.
3. Who was the lead singer in 70s TV group The Partridge Family?

Answer: David Cassidy

Cassidy managed to combine the role of Keith Partridge in the TV show with his increasingly successful solo career until 1974. He quit the TV show in 1974 and went on to have five UK top 40 solo hits, the same number that he had while with The Partridge Family, although two of those reached number one.

The partridge itself charts at number two on the list of most popular game birds according to "thespruceeats.com", with grouse taking the top spot.
4. "My little chickadee" is a term of endearment used by W.C. Fields when addressing Alison Skipworth in the 1932 movie "If I Had A Million". What is a chickadee called in UK?

Answer: Tit

The tit family includes the blue tit, grey tit, yellow tit, dusky tit, great tit and grey headed chickadee to name but a few of the fifty plus species in this family. As a form of address to a lady, the American version sounds much better than its British counterpart in my opinion.
5. Set south of Grantham, Lincolnshire in 1938, which train holds the world speed record for steam locomotives?

Answer: Mallard

The 70 feet long Mallard set a time of 203 kmh (126 mph) between the villages of Little Bytham and Essendine, while testing a new quick acting brake. In doing so it broke the record that had been set in 1936 by the German built Deutsche Reichsbahn's Class 05-002 of 200.4 kmh (120.5 mph). Mallard ducks are not renowned for their speed, although they are better at floating on water than most trains.
6. Which science fiction hero first appeared in 1950 in issue one of UK comic book, "The Eagle"?

Answer: Dan Dare

The Dan Dare stories were so popular that they were dramatised on "pirate" radio station Luxembourg nightly between 1951 and 1956. After publication of "The Eagle" stopped in 1969, Dan Dare was in space limbo for a few years before appearing on the cover of issue one of "2000 AD" in 1977. I suppose that the years when he was lost between 1969 and 1977 could be made into a movie called, "Where Eagle's Dare?".
7. Which McVitie's chocolate biscuit, first produced in 1932, has appeared in chocolate, mint, orange and toffee flavours?

Answer: Penguin

When I was a kid, Penguins used to have the corniest penguin related jokes ever printed on the wrappers, for example, "Why do penguins wear glasses?"
"To help their ice sight!". I do hope that today's kids suffer these too. Real penguins are not chocolate covered but are hunted by leopard seals who view them as "an ice snack".
8. Who was the first female presenter on UK radio station BBC Radio One?

Answer: Annie Nightingale

Annie started on Radio One in 1969 and in 2018 she celebrated her 78th birthday, still with a show on the station, between 1 am to 3 am on Wednesday mornings. In the 70s she replaced "Whispering" Bob Harris as presenter of seminal TV music show "The Old Grey Whistle Test", staying in the role until 1982. First issued in 1994, the Croatian one kuna coin depicts a nightingale, but sadly this is the bird, not Annie.
9. In the "Batman" comic book series, the fourth person to assume the identity of his sidekick Robin was a girl. What was her name?

Answer: Stephanie Brown

Stephanie was the love interest of the third Robin, Tim Drake, who was ordered to hang up his cape and spandex by his father. Stephanie convinced Batman to train her as the new Robin, but he was forced to fire her from the role as she wouldn't listen to orders. No stereotyping in DC Universe then?

Selina Kyle is Catwoman, Kate Kane is Batwoman and Barbara Gordon is Batgirl. Robins are not regarded as superheroes, apart from by their chicks and neighbouring bird families as their parenting instincts are so developed, they will often feed the chicks of nearby blackbirds, thrushes and flycatchers as well as their own.
10. Who is the protagonist of the "Twilight" series of books by Stephenie Meyer?

Answer: Bella Swan

This phenomenally successful series of books concerns Bella's love for Edward Cullen, a vampire, and the love felt for her by Jacob Black, who has the ability to shape shift into a wolf. The swan is seen by many cultures as a symbol for elegance, calm and beauty, so that may have been Meyer's reason for choosing the name, although Cullen is a Scottish town famous for thick haddock soup, so maybe I'm reading too much into the symbolism?
