Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's warm up with a word question. What is the primary difference between a preface and a foreword of a book?

Answer: The preface is generally written by the author, but the foreword isn't

A foreword is usually written by someone other than the author as an endorsement of the book. It will often be an expert in the field, or perhaps a well-known novelist who supports the work of his or her colleague. The preface, on the other hand, is the author's chance to briefly explain something about the book, or to acknowledge people who helped in some way.
2. The meats pancetta and prosciutto have many similarities, but which one of these is a difference between them?

Answer: They come from different parts of the same animal.

Both are products derived from the pig, but from different parts. Pancetta is from the belly and is similar to bacon in the way it is prepared and in taste. Prosciutto, on the other hand, comes from the leg and is treated more like ham. Both are salted and cured. Prosciutto is also cut more thinly as a general rule.
3. The US states Virginia and West Virginia used to be one large state, but now they are quite different. Which one is officially named a 'Commonwealth'?

Answer: Virginia

The Commonwealth of Virginia is much larger of the two states, with a population of 8.2 million in 2013, compared to just 1.8 million in its western neighbour. West Virginia broke away from its larger parent state during the Civil War, officially being admitted to the Union in 1863.
4. The words 'disc' and 'disk' are very similar and pronounced the same, but do the words mean exactly the same thing?

Answer: No

While there is some debate over whether these words are interchangeable, most technical experts agree that there is a real difference, particularly in information technology terms. A disc is optical media that can be removed from a device; for example, a CD or DVD. A disk, on the other hand, is magnetic media that generally sits inside a computer hard drive.
5. I am constantly confused between baking powder and baking soda. Which one of these can help me remember the difference?

Answer: Baking powder contains baking soda.

Baking soda is simply pure sodium bicarbonate, while baking powder contains both sodium bicarbonate along with an acidifying agent (cream of tartar), and a drying agent (starch or a similar agent). Both are leavening agents, but the use of one or the other in cooking depends on other ingredients present. Because baking soda is a base, it has a bitter taste which has to be offset by other ingredients (e.g. buttermilk in sweet recipes). Baking powder, on the other hand, has both acidic and basic elements and only needs to be offset by neutral ingredients (e.g. milk in cake recipes).
6. There are quite a few differences between the Sunni and Shia (Shiite) Muslim groups. Which of these is NOT true when comparing them?

Answer: The Shia represent a majority of Islam adherents.

The Sunnis represent the vast majority of Islamic adherents throughout the world. Estimates vary, but it is agreed that somewhere between 85-92 per cent of Muslims are Sunni. The split between these groups dates back to the death of Prophet Muhammed, and the debate about who should have taken leadership of the faith. To put it basically, Sunni Muslims were of the opinion that a new leader should be elected, while Shia Muslims preferred leadership to be passed along family lines.

This is reflected in their names: "Sunni" means "one who follows the traditions of the Prophet", while "Shia" is derived from a phrase meaning "the Party of Ali", who was the next in line to Prophet Muhammed, being his cousin and son-in-law.
7. What is the difference between the speed and the velocity of an object?

Answer: Velocity takes into account the direction it is travelling.

Speed is what is known as a 'scalar' quantity, and simply measures the amount of distance an object travels in a given time. Velocity, on the other hand, is a 'vector' quantity, taking into account the direction travelled as well as the speed.
8. Prawn and shrimp are similar in appearance, but what is the major generally-accepted difference between the two?

Answer: Size

Both are from the subphylyum Crustacea, and both are Decapods (they have ten legs). They are eaten in similar types of dishes and often used interchangeably. Prawns are generally larger, growing up to about 200mm (about eight inches) compared to shrimp that grow to about one-fifth of that size.

Another less subtle difference is the number of leg pairs that have claws: prawns have three, while shrimp only have two!
9. Are sweet potatoes and yams the same thing botanically?

Answer: No

As it turns out, they aren't even from the same family. Sweet potatoes (Ipomoea batatas) are native to the tropical Americas and generally come in only two varieties. Yams (Dioscoreaceae) come in several varieties and are native to tropical areas. Sweet potatoes are almost always tapered at the ends and are smaller than yams.
10. The North and South Poles are both very cold compared to the rest of the world, but which is colder when comparing average yearlong temperatures?

Answer: The South Pole

Antarctic temperatures are in some places so cool that the snow and ice never melt. The South Pole averages a yearlong temperature of about -49 degrees C (-56 F) compared to about -34 C (-29 F). Other differences between the poles include wildlife (e.g. penguins live in the south, polar bears north) and rate of melting (the south is much more stable than the north from year to year).
