Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Humanities: Tennessee Williams wrote a four-actor play. The four characters are Amanda, Laura, Tom, and Jim. What is the name of the play?

Answer: The Glass Menagerie

Amanda is the stressed-out mother and Laura is the introverted woman who collects glass animals. Tom is the son who only wants to escape but is bound to the welfare of his mother and Laura. Lastly, Jim is the gentleman caller that all three think might change their lives.
2. Music: I may be crazy, but I went out walking after midnight. It was scary but I did not fall to pieces and got home to have sweet dreams. Who am I?

Answer: Patsy Cline

Patsy Cline was one of the few early country music artists to become a cross-over star to popular mainstream music. The film "Sweet Dreams" (1985) chronicled her life with her rise to fame and her death. The movie was perhaps not a hundred percent accurate.
3. Movies: Lon Chaney Sr. was a dominating star of silent films. He was known as the man of a thousand faces as he played disabled or grotesque characters. In the 1927 film "The Unknown", he played a circus knife thrower. What was unusual about this?

Answer: He threw knives with his feet

The film features a very young Joan Crawford as the assistant in the knife throwing act. There is a love triangle with Chaney, Crawford, and the circus strongman. This is complicated by the phobia Crawford has (i.e., a fear of being touched). It explores the extent to which love can present difficult choices.
4. History: The thirteen stripes in the United States' flag represent the original thirteen colonies of the union. What was the fourteenth colony?

Answer: Vermont

Vermont was admitted to the union in 1791. Kentucky was admitted later in that year to balance off the slave-holding and non-slave-holding states. For some time, the area was claimed by both New Hampshire and New York.
5. Television: Who was NOT a regular on the "Howdy Doody Show"?

Answer: Kukla

You might also see Clarabelle, Phineas T. Bluster, and the Flub-a-Dub. Kukla is from "Kukla, Fran, and Ollie".
6. Science/Technology: Your doctor tells you that you have a renal illness. What part of your body is affected?

Answer: Kidneys

Renal disease may be acute or chronic. A measure of creatinine in the blood is a warning sign. Further testing, such as a blood test for anemia and an ultrasound of the kidneys, may be needed for diagnosis.
7. Sports: Caber tossing is a sport peculiar to Scotland. What is a caber?

Answer: A long post resembling a telephone pole

The caber is generally about 18 feet long and weighs about 115 pounds. The purpose of the 'toss' is not distance but accuracy. Imagine the face of a clock. A perfect throw would be at 12:00. An 11:00 throw would be to the left and 1:00 to the right.
8. Hobbies: Brandy is a popular alcoholic beverage. According to legend, how did it get its name?

Answer: The name means burnt wine

According to legend, in order to avoid a tax on wine, the wine was distilled and therefore "burnt". Hence, burnt-wine became brandy.
9. People: Which of these four men was never a slave?

Answer: W.E.B. Dubois

W.E.B. Dubois was born free in Massachusetts and pulled himself up by the bootstraps to become one of the most versatile and powerful advocates of racial equality.

Saint Patrick was sold in slavery in Ireland, escaped to France, became a monk, and returned to Ireland as a missionary.

Nat Turner led a rebellion of slaves in 1831 and murdered many whites. He was caught, hanged, and skinned.

Fredrick Douglas was a former slave and later became a strong abolitionist and newspaper publisher.
10. Literature: Most school children know the stories of Lilliput and Brobdingnag where, in "Gulliver's Travels", they encounter very little people and giants. A few may know of Houghyhnms, where society is ruled by horses over the disgusting Yahoos. But fewer have read about Laputa. What was unique about Laputa?

Answer: It was a flying island in the sky

Laputa, Jonathan Swift tells us, is a haven for scientists. In one scene, Gulliver observes several scientists who have placed bellows in the anus of a dog, which they begin pumping vigorously. The dog dies. The scientists study the matter carefully. They then reinsert the bellows believing that they can revive the dog by the same means in which they killed it.
