This quiz is all about miraculous survivals. I started writing this quiz as part of the 'Author's Challenge' but it's taken me so long, I'm wondering just how this quiz survived!

1. What body part did Mike the Chicken (April 1945 - March 1947) survive without for 18 months?

Answer: Head

Mike's owner, Lloyd Olsen, chopped off the bird's head to kill him for supper, but amazingly Mike survived and lived on for a further 18 months. Mike the Chicken was born in April 1945 in Colorado.
2. In 2013, after the capsize of the tugboat he was on, Nigerian chef Harrison Okene was trapped underwater without food or water, yet kept alive in an air pocket in a toilet. For how long did his ordeal last?

Answer: 60 hours

Rescue divers originally thought Harrison was a corpse when they saw his hand in the water. After his rescue Harrison spent a further 60 hours in a decompression tank but apart from nightmares, he fully recovered from his ordeal. Tragically, the other 11 crew members of Jacson-4 did not survive.
3. In 2013 in Sweden, one lucky man survived being crushed by what? He wasn't telling porkies!

Answer: Half a ton of bacon

The unnamed man worked for a meat packing company in in Gamlestaden, Sweden. He was injured when a pallet of bacon toppled over onto him. His injuries were not life-threatening.
4. In 1945, a lift operator in New York's Empire State Building survived not one but two potentially fatal situations in one day. The first was a B-25 bomber crashing into the Empire State Building and injuring her, but what happened afterwards?

Answer: The cables on the lift her rescuers put her in snapped and the lift fell 75 floors

Happily, Betty Lou Oliver survived her injuries from both situations and returned to her work after five months of convalescence. She died many years later on March 8, 1994.

Answer: They all survived execution by hanging

In 1650, Anne Greene was sentenced to hang after being found guilty of murdering her newborn baby. She was revived after being cut down and taken to be dissected by an anatomical lecturer where it was noticed that she was breathing! John Lee (1864-1945) was convicted of the murder of his employer in Babbacombe, Torquay and sentenced to hang.

The gallows malfunctioned three times. In 2013, Alireza M recovered in the mortuary after being hanged on a drugs conviction in Iran.
6. Soccer player Fabrice ­Muamba collapsed while playing for Bolton Wanderers against Tottenham Hotspur in March 2012. His heart stopped and did not start unaided until he reached hospital. For how long was his heart stopped?

Answer: 78 minutes

Thankfully Fabrice recovered, but on medical advice, retired from playing soccer.
The match was stopped after Fabrice's collapse and Tottenham went on to win the re-arranged fixture 3-1.

Answer: The parrot gave his name and address

The parrot had been taught his name and address by his owners. When taken to the veterinary services, he recited his full name and address, allowing the owners to be contacted.

Answer: Flushing him down the toilet

Luckily the cocker spaniel puppy was located in the drains close to his home and was rescued after four hours, with no long lasting effects. This occurred in Northolt, Middlesex, England.
9. In 2014, a teenage boy from Santa Clara, California survived an airplane journey from California to Hawaii. Why was this so remarkable?

Answer: He was hiding in the airplane's landing gear

While the subzero temperatures down as low as -80F could have killed him, the cold could also have helped him to survive, slowing his bodily processes. He remained unconscious for most of the journey.

Answer: Burying Alexander

Alexander was buried up to his neck in dirt twice, in an effort to rid him of electrical charges. It is not known if the 'treatment' was successful.
