Tennessee was a federal territory (as opposed to province) prior to joining the Union, the first territory with this status to do so. Congress voted to admit Tennessee to the Union on June 1st, 1796.

The Grand Ole Opry has been broadcasting country music from Nashville since 1925. The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum was established in the city in 1961.
