Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The word "bedlam" originated in a 19th century English orphanage to describe misbehaviour at bedtime. True or false?

Answer: False

Bedlam comes from Middle English "Bedlem" - it is a corruption of "St Mary of BETHLEHEM" hospital which was used as an asylum.
2. Which of these Mother Goose rhymes does not contain a reference to bed or beds?

Answer: My little old man and I fell out

"My little old man and I fell out"...about money, not the sleeping arrangements!
3. According to "2003 Guiness World Records" what is the world's fastest time for making a bed (2 people, hospital corners)?

Answer: 14 seconds

One blanket, two sheets, undersheet, pillowcase and counterpane. Well done Sister Stringer and Nurse Benkel! When I tell my kids to make their bed it takes longer than 14 seconds just for them to stand up!
4. If you have the letters BEd after your name, what would your profession most likely be?

Answer: teacher

BEd = Bachelor of Education. (OK, I know, the bedspread's spreading a bit thin at this point!)
5. When and where did John Lennon and Yoko Ono hold their first "Bed-In"?

Answer: March 1969 in Amsterdam

The bed-ins were a media-friendly form of peace protest. The first one in Amsterdam was actually part of their honeymoon. The second one was held in May 1969 in Montreal after they weren't allowed entry into the USA because of a previous drug conviction.
6. In which Dr Seuss book will you find the line: "I will not eat them in a bed. I will not eat them Sam, I said."?

Answer: You won't find it in any Dr Seuss book.

I made it up, but it does sound like a line from "Green Eggs and Ham". The unnamed character in that story initially refuses to eat green eggs and ham in a house, a box, a car, a train and a boat, but he doesn't mention his bed.
7. Which of the following is not a definition of "bedder"?

Answer: a lidded ceramic chamber pot

I've never heard the word before! (When I lived on campus we had to make our own beds!) But the World Book Dictionary assures me these definitions are all correct.
8. Who co-wrote and sang the following lyrics in 1980? "Bed of coals Bed of nails Through the smoke Behind the veils"?

Answer: Warren Zevon

From "Bed of Coals", co-written with T-Bone Burnett for Zevon's "Bad Luck Streak in Dancing School" album.
9. A 'bedtick' is the same as a 'bedbug'. True or false?

Answer: False

Apparently a bedtick is a cloth matress covering - as in old-fashioned blue and white striped 'ticking'. A bedbug is a nasty little pest and the reason that in certain parts of the world backpackers are adviced to always check the bed before they agree to take a room!
10. Complete instruction no.303 from H. Jackson Brown Jr's "Life's Little Instruction Book": "Never go to bed__________"

Answer: with dirty dishes in the sink

Other instructions include: No.308 "Make the bed when you're an overnight visitor in someone's home" and from Vol.II no.839 "Never grab at a falling knife". (Not bed-related, but excellent advice nevertheless!)

Thanks for playing!
