Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Bad is also a Dutch word. It means something completely different. As a verb, it is the past tense of 'bidden' which means 'to pray'. What is the English translation of the Dutch noun 'bad'?

Answer: Bath (like the tub)

The story that the bathtub was only introduced in the USA in 1842 is actually a hoax. American journalist H.L. Mencken made up this fake history of the bathtub to prove that Americans will believe anything published in the newspaper.
2. In the western 'The Good, the Bad and the Ugly' Lee van Cleef plays the role of the Bad. The character's name is Sentenza, but what is his nickname?

Answer: Angel Eyes

Lee van Cleef can be seen in many good westerns, but I think his performance in 'The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly' is the best. The long shot with the three men staring each other down is a classic. The eyes of Lee are indeed very catching.
3. It would be too simple to ask you "who sang 'Bad', so instead, please complete this lyric from the Michael Jackson song: "and the whole ______ has to answer right now, just to tell you once again, who's bad?"

Answer: world

With over eight million copies sold the Album 'Bad' did not do as well as 'Thriller' but most artists can only dream of quantities like that. The 1987 album also has hits like 'Liberian Girl' and 'Dirty Diana'.
4. "And it's bad, bad Leroy Brown, the baddest man in the whole damn town". A well known song. Who was the original performer?

Answer: Jim Croce

'Bad, Bad Leroy Brown' was released in April 1973, and managed to stay on the charts until the end of September. Jim Croce died at only thirty years old in a plane crash in Natchitoches, Louisiana.
Frank Sinatra also recorded this song, but only in December 1973.
5. 'Bad' is also an abbreviation. It is used by a skin disease website in Great Britain. Do you know (or can you guess) the full name of B.A.D.?

Answer: British Association of Dermatologists

It is a long-established association of practicing dermatologists. Their aim is to continually improve the treatment and understanding of skin disease. ref: www.bad.org.uk
6. Killers are bad, very bad people. Which of these serial killers has the highest death count?

Answer: Pedro Alonso Lopez

Pedro Alonso Lopez a.k.a. "Monster of the Andes" killed more than three hundred people in Peru, Colombia and Ecuador. Officials say that the number is likely to be even higher. In any case more than the two hundred killed by Henry Lee Lucas (who I left out of the answers to be on the safe side).
Bruce Lee was actually a deformed epileptic pyromaniac who legally changed his name in honor of his Kung-Fu-fighting hero. He killed twenty six people most of whom died in fires he set.
Charles Ng 'only' killed about twenty five people, some of whom together with Leonard Lake.
Ted Bundy is probably the most infamous one. About twenty two kills can be placed on his account, some of which he denied.
7. Which actor managed to be nominated for a Razzie Award (worst actor) as well as an Oscar nomination for best actor for the same character role?

Answer: Sylvester Stallone

This shows you that taste is very personal. Sylvester Gardenzio Stallone won nine Razzies and was nominated for them a zillion times. He even has the 'honor' of being the worst actor of the decade and century. Two of the Razzies were for his role as Rocky (IV and V).

He also was nominated for a real Oscar for that same role (Rocky I) and even one for best writing screenplay. He is the third person to combine these two awards (as of 2005) and also the only one to combine an Oscar and a Razzie for the same part.
8. Coincidentally badminton is my favourite sport. It has nothing to do with bad as in 'not good', but with the House of Badminton of the Duke of Beaufort in Gloucestershire UK. Interesting! Is it allowed when the shuttle touches the net during the service?

Answer: Yes

Yes it is allowed, as long as it goes over the net and does not fall outside the service area in the receiving field. In tennis it is not allowed. You would have to play a 'let' in that case.
9. 'Bad Taste' is not only a self mocking New Zealand movie about aliens, it is also used to express a certain kind of art. What is another word for art which is in bad taste, worth nothing and considered a bad copy of an existing style?

Answer: Kitsch

Kitsch is originally a German word most probably derived from old language 'kitschen' which meant 'mud from the street'. An other plausible origin is a German mispronunciation of the English word 'sketch', which in its turn is a cheap and easy sellable work of art.
10. An example of a bad joke is a joke which is cruel or unkind to a specific group. Lawyers, blonds and rednecks are well known victims of the bad jokes. Can you select the best punch line for this bad joke: Child: "Mommy, mommy, why do I keep going in circles?"

Answer: Mother: "Be silent or I'll nail your other foot to the floor!

All other bad punch lines are from other known jokes. A 'knock-knock' joke (Doctor), and a 'chicken crossing the road' joke. The snake joke is an answer to a bad meaningless 'why does' question. Smile!
