Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Music: What artist released the worldwide hit single "Black or White" in 1991? You should be "thrilled" with the answer!

Answer: Michael Jackson

Jackson released "Black and White" as the first single from his eighth studio album "Dangerous". "Black and White" charted at number one all around the world and was number one on the US Billboard Top 100 chart for seven weeks.
2. Movies: Who starred in the 1954 film "The Black Knight" as John the blacksmith and sword-smith who conspired to overthrow King Arthur? (Hint: This star also portrayed Jay Gatsby in 1949 and Shane in 1953).

Answer: Alan Ladd

John (Alan Ladd) wants to win the hand of Lady Linet (Patricia Medina) in "The Black Knight". Knowing that's impossible because he's a commoner, he creates a secret alternate identity as the Black Knight which allows him to aid King Arthur when men disguised as Vikings attempt to take over the country.

While attempting to help Lady Linet, the Black Knight is branded a traitor. "The Dark Knight" was Ladd's third film in a trilogy. The other two were "The Red Beret" (1953) and "Hell Below Zero" (1954). All three films were based on the 1949 book "The White South" by British novelist Hammon Innes.
3. Literature: "Black Beauty", a novel about animal welfare, was published in 1877 by which English female author?

Answer: Anna Sewell

"Black Beauty" was the only novel Anna Sewell ever published. The novel was released five months before her death and has sold more than 50 million copies. She wrote "Black Beauty" in the first person narrative, so you see life from the eyes of the horse, Black Beauty, from birth to death and through all of its trials and tribulations.

It teaches children to treat everyone with respect, kindness and sympathy. "Black Beauty" was listed on BBC's The Big Read survey as number 58 in 2003.
4. Religion: The Black Buddha is a fascinating subject. What people are thought to have started the practice of Buddhism and sent black missionaries throughout India and Asia 500 years before Christianity?

Answer: Ethiopians

People of color began emigrating from Ethiopia about 50,000 years ago and spread throughout Africa and Asia. Buddhist missionaries entered Asia sometime before 500 BC and established their religion. Many Buddhist temples were built beginning circa 500 BC, and many Black Buddha statues were cast and erected. Buddha was supposedly "an Enlightened Master from the Sakya clan of the Naga Race (Sri Lanka, 3rd century BC), and was the first man on earth to preach the great principles of equality, liberty and fraternity." I researched many sources for this information and the most interesting in my opinion from nairaland.com and Wikipedia.org.
5. Geography: The Black Hills are primarily located in which state of the United States?

Answer: South Dakota

The Black Hills got their name from the Native American Lakota Sioux ("Pahá Sápa" in the Lakota language) due to their tree-colored appearance from a distance. The Black Hills are actually a small mountain range that extends from western South Dakota into Wyoming.

The highest elevation of the Black Hills, and the highest point in South Dakota, is Harney Peak at 7,244 feet (2,208 m). Harney Peak is in the Black Elk Wilderness area of the Black Hills National Forest, which comprises more than 1.25 million acres!
6. History: Black Tuesday was not a good day in the history of the United States. This horrific day in 1929 was the beginning of what?

Answer: Great Depression

Wall Street crashed on Tuesday, October 29th, 1929, after losing 24 percent of its value in less than two days. This was the beginning of The Great Depression which lasted more than ten years. The Stock Market Crash of 1929 was primarily caused by over-speculation, wealth and excess.

Many people of wealth went from living in manors to standing in breadlines in a very short period of time. The stock market continued to slide, until July 1932 when the market stabilized and began a sluggish recovery.

But much damage had been done and the United States was in a long depression.
7. General Knowledge: Black is the lack of color. It is also sometimes considered the color of fear. Black tourmaline and which other black crystal are primarily used in personal protection amulets?

Answer: Onyx

Black tourmaline and onyx are two of the primary power crystals used as amulet stones. Three others are agate, obsidian and hematite. A stone's energy field is comprised of its geometric shape, color and several other factors. Fear of the unknown, especially the dark of a moonless night, has troubled mankind since homo erectus (Latin for "upright man) and probably even before man's discovery of fire.

Many believe black crystals are very protective and may hide a person from their enemies so many hang a crystal near their door. Sounds similar to Native Americans and dream catchers, doesn't it? Since ancient times, healing stones, crystals and semi-precious gemstones have been used by those who believe in their powers and sometimes even believe in magic.
8. Sci/Tech: What is the name of the central black hole at the center of the Milky Way galaxy?

Answer: Sagittarius A*

The Milky Way's central black hole, known as Sagittarius A*, has a mass four million times that of our Sun. Sagittarius A* (pronounced "Sagittarius A-star", standard abbreviation Sgr A*). It is a bright and very compact astronomical radio source at the center of the Milky Way, near the border of the constellations Sagittarius and Scorpius.

It is part of a larger astronomical feature known as Sagittarius A. Sagittarius A* is believed to be the location of a supermassive black hole, like those that are now generally accepted to be at the centers of most spiral and elliptical galaxies.
9. Animals: What kind of animal is the creature in English folklore known as Black Shuck?

Answer: Dog

England has many folk legends and myths about monstrous black hounds of supernatural origin. The legend of Black Shuck, with malevolent flaming eyes, comes from East Anglia. In 1577, it allegedly rampaged through churches in Bungay and Blythburg, leaving four people dead and scorch marks to commemorate his passing through the area. Also on that date in 1577, a fierce electrical storm was recorded and with the ongoing Reformation causing trauma, this may have led to accounts of Black Shuck entering English folklore. Accounts of Black Shuck also form part of folklore in Essex, Suffolk, Norfolk and the Cambridgeshire fens.

A large dog was excavated at Leiston Abbey in May 2014 and was linked to the Black Shuck legend!
10. Television: "Baa Baa Black Sheep" was an American TV show that ran on the NBC network from 1976 until 1978. Who starred and played the role of United States Marine Corps aviator Greg Boyington and his World War II "Black Sheep Squadron"?

Answer: Robert Conrad

Robert Conrad starred as U.S.M.C. Major Gregory/Greg "Pappy" Boyington. Boyington was real life pilot and Commanding Officer of VMF-214, the Black Sheep Squadron. Conrad starred and also narrated the show on NBC for two years for a total of 36 episodes.

He is also famous for his role as Secret Service agent James West in the CBS TV series "The Wild Wild West" which aired for four years, from 1965 to 1969, for a total of 104 episodes.
