Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the birth name of the person who wrote the poem "Jabberwocky"?

Answer: Charles Dodgson

Charles Dodgson is the real name of the man who wrote under the pen name of Lewis Carroll. The poem can be found in "Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There", written in 1872.

"O frabJous day! Callooh! Callay! He chortled in his Joy."
2. In the U.S. one of the major music awards is called the "Grammy". In Canada, it is known as what?

Answer: Juno

Although many people think the Juno awards came from the name of the Roman goddess and wife of Jupiter, it's really a play on words as they were named after Pierre Juneau, former president of CBC and the first president of the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission.
3. What is a Dark-Eyed Junco?

Answer: a bird

Juncos are small North American songbirds, usually found in boreal habitats. However, they are quite adaptable and in my part of Canada their arrival in the fall is a signal that winter weather is imminent.
4. A lot of people are familiar with the Christmas carol "Joy to the World", but Three Dog Night recorded a song by the same title that involved someone called what?

Answer: Jeremiah

"Jeremiah was a bullfrog - was a good friend of mine. I never understood a single word he said, but I helped him a-drink his wine".
5. Also a name for a rock or gemstone, which of the following is the name of a town which can be found in the Rocky Mountains of Canada?

Answer: Jasper

The town of Jasper is located within Jasper National Park, established as a protected forest area in 1907 ("officially" not a national park until 1930). While some people think that the name comes from the chalcendoic rock with high iron content, the town/park is actually named after Jasper Hawse (sometimes spelled Haws), a Metis trading post manager in the early 1800s.
6. Which German soccer star, whose last name sounds like a member of a familial Scottish group, took over as the coach of the U.S. Soccer team on July 29th, 2011?

Answer: Jurgen Klinsman

Born in 1964, Jurgen Klinsman started playing professionally for the Stuttgarter Kickers in 1982 and soon made a name for himself as a quality goal scorer and intense athlete. He played in leagues in Germany, Italy, England and France, as well as playing on the German national team. He scored 47 goals in 108 caps for the West German/German national team in various International matches. Jurgen has also coached the German national team and Bayern Munich.
7. Which of the following is NOT a plant, flower or tree?

Answer: jacamar

A jacamar is a small bird found generally in Central America and Mexico. Most species have very attractive iridescent green or blue plumage and nest in holes or termite mounds. Their chicks hatch feathered, which is unusual for genetically similar birds.
8. With a title that a lawyer might appreciate, what song by The Greg Kihn Band made it as high as #2 on the U.S. based Billboard Hot 100 in 1983?

Answer: Jeopardy

"Jeopardy" is from the album "Khinspiracy". Some of you may recognise it as the one spoofed by Weird Al Yankovic called "I Lost on Jeopardy".

The wrong answers are all songs from other artists popular in the 1980s. "Jump" is from Van Halen. John Cougar, now known as John Mellencamp, did "Jack and Diane" and Rick Springfield sang "Jessie's Girl".
9. Although one of these words has a more usual meaning, it is also the term for a milk-based dessert. Which word is it?

Answer: junket

Junket (normally meaning a type of excursion) is also a dessert, usually concocted out of milk, sugar, nutmeg and rennet (which effectively "curdles" the milk). The result is of custard consistency and, like revenge, is a dish best served cold.
10. What is the name of the North American mythical creature that is part hare?

Answer: Jackalope

The Jackalope name is a hybrid of jackrabbit and antelope. Depicted as normally shy, it is a fearsome critter when approached due to its sharp antlers. The "legend" may have begun with sightings of jackrabbits and cottontails infected with Shope Papilloma Virus which can cause horn-like tumors. Tall tales about Jackalopes include that their milk has medicinal purposes, that they can mimic sounds including human voices and that they have a vice for whiskey (my kind of wabbit) : )
