Answer: Edward Jenner

Edward Jenner (1749-1823) was an English physician and surgeon who lived in a world where a large part of the population died or suffered permanent damage from contracting smallpox. At that time, in Asia and in several countries the only way to prevent the disease was the inoculation of pus from an infected person into a healthy person's bloodstream (a process named "variolation"), which sometimes caused permanent damage to those who underwent the procedure.

Jenner, who was a family doctor in the countryside, noted that milkmaids who caught cowpox from their cows had no smallpox (which was more lethal than cowpox). Jenner decided to use pus from a milkmaid's blister to inoculate a child. This procedure showed that it was possible to immunize people without resorting to material directly obtained from cattle. In 1796, he began the procedure named "vaccination", his technique to prevent smallpox. This process was quickly disseminated around the world, although its acceptance in scientific groups took a long time. In the 1840s, the medical establishment accepted Jenner's findings and adopted vaccination as a method of preventing disease (UK, Vaccination Act, 1840, which made variolation illegal.).
