Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Angie Bowie, Christina Onassis and Glenn Close are all famous alumni of St. George's International School, in the village of Clarens, in which European country?

Answer: Switzerland

St. George's International School was founded in 1927 by two Oxford University graduates, Lorna Southwell and Osyth Potts, who after witnessing the horrors of WWI, envisaged a school where children of all nationalities could share the difficulties of growing up, leading them to understand others better when they matured into adults.

The school takes day students from age three and boarding students from age nine, with class sizes varying between two and nineteen pupils.
2. In the series of books about Thomas the Tank Engine, by Rev. W Awdry, what sort of vehicle was George?

Answer: Steamroller

George the Steamroller made his first appearance in Rev. Awdry's books in 1962, in the book titled, "Gallant Old Engine", the same book that first saw Nancy, the Guard's Daughter, appear.
George is a grumpy, coal powered steam roller, often referred to by steam engine Sir Handel as a "great clumsy road-hog".
3. George airport, situated in the city of George in Western Cape, South Africa used to be named after a former Prime Minister of the country. Which one?

Answer: P.W. Botha

Pieter Willem Botha, known as "Die Groot Krokodil" or "The Great Crocodile" in Afrikaans, was the Member of the South African House of Assembly, representing George between 1948 and 1958, becoming the Prime Minister of South Africa in 1978 and serving until 1984, when he abolished the position, becoming the country's first State President between 1984 and 1989.
4. When Lonesome George was discovered in 1971, he was the last of his species, and lived out the rest of his days on Santa Cruz Island, before passing away in 2012, aged 102. What was Lonesome George?

Answer: Tortoise

Lonesome George was a Pinta Island tortoise, who, for the final years of his life was the rarest creature in the world. For his own safety, he was moved from Pinta Island in the Galapagos Islands to the Charles Darwin Research Station on Santa Cruz Island, also in the Galapagos group.
Following his death on June 24th 2012, he was taxidermied and is now on display at the research station.
5. Always dressed in a blue shirt and usually holding his toy dinosaur, George is a two year old, often reduced to tears by his sister's teasing. Who is his sister?

Answer: Peppa Pig

"Peppa Pig" started on UK TV screens in 2004 and continues to gain new fans as successive generations of preschool kids are enthralled by it. Merchandise sales for the show grossed over £200 million in UK in 2010 and in 2011 a Peppa Pig theme park opened in Hampshire.
6. George Street is the main street of which city on the South Island of New Zealand?

Dunedin is the second largest city on the South Island after Christchurch, and takes its name from the Scottish Gaelic for Edinburgh (Dun Eideann).
George Street and the other main street in the city, Princes Street, meet in the centre of the city at The Octagon.
The Meridian Mall shopping complex is on George Street, as is Woodhaugh Gardens, a large park with barbeque facilities, picnic areas and a playground on the banks of the Water of Leith, a 14 kilometre (8.7 miles) long stream.
7. George was preceded by Slats, Jackie, Telly, Coffee and Tanner, while Leo followed George. At the start of films from which movie studio would you see George?

Answer: MGM

These are all lions that have been used at the start of MGM movies. George was used at the start of MGM films between 1956 and 1958, and for anyone with time to spare comparing the lions, he is apparently easy to spot as he was the most heavily maned of any of the lions.
8. George has a nine litre capacity, compared to the six litre capacity of Henry and Hetty. What are Henry, Hetty and George?

Answer: Vacuum Cleaners

These vacuum cleaners are made by Numatic International in Chard, Somerset, UK and all vacuums in the range have a cute face on the cylinder. Henry is red, Hetty is pink and has long eyelashes, while George is green and comes with tools to allow "him" to be used for both wet and dry vacuuming, carpet and upholstery cleaning, even unblocking sinks.
9. Lake George is a 32 mile (51 kilometre) long, 187 feet (57 metres) deep lake, often called "The Queen of American Lakes". In which state is Lake George?

Answer: New York

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Lake George was a popular tourist destination for the rich and famous including the Roosevelt, Vanderbilt and Rockefeller families.
Now in the 21st century, it remains a popular destination for thousands of families each year, attracted by the abundance of water sports, hiking trails and camping resorts in the region, generating approximately $2 billion each year for the local area.
10. By George! This is the final question, so who is the George mentioned in the expression, "By George!"?

Answer: God

In this expression, as in others such as "golly", "gosh" and "gum", George is a substitute for God. George as a euphemism became popular in the late 1500s and is used in the Ben Jonson play, "Every Man in His Humor" (1598), with the line, "I, Well! he knowes what to trust to, for George."
The expression "By George" made its first literary appearance in 1694 in a translation of Plautus' comedy, "Rudens", with the phrase, "By George, you shan't be a Sowce the better for what's in it.", with "sowce" being a now obsolete form of "souse" or "drunkard".
