"Choose any color, as long as you choose black" Quiz

Henry Ford allegedly used the quote in the title, but probably not: you could get your Model T in other colors. But in this quiz it's black all the way.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Black holes are massive objects from which no light can escape. Which scientist argued that black holes nevertheless emit radiation?

Answer: Stephen Hawking

The so-called "Hawking radiation" is a theoretical conclusion from 1973. It's likely (my speculation) that a confirmation within his lifetime would have earned Stephen Hawking a Nobel Prize in physics. Anaximander and Galilei would not have had an opinion: knowledge of black holes is a consequence of both general relativity and quantum theory, both developed in the 20th century.
2. What color, according to the memoirs of Piper Kerman and a Netflix TV series, is "the new black"?

Answer: Orange

Wearing black at a formal affair is considered the conservative and safe choice for both men and women. Saying that something is "the new black" is saying that it's the new thing that everyone wears. In the book and TV series, orange refers to a common color of prison garbs: the storyline is about a young middle-class woman who finds herself in prison.
3. In Western culture, black is the color of mourning. This is by no means universal. What color is associated with funerals and grief in China?

Answer: White

In the West, white is of course instead associated with weddings, a tradition usually attributed as being made popular by Queen Victoria.
4. One of history's first blacklists, at least with that name, was put together by an English monarch and contained people who should be punished for killing his father. Who was the father?

Answer: Charles I

The execution of Charles I in 1649 happened during the English Civil War, during which parliament and Oliver Cromwell seized control of the country. It was followed by the period called the Restoration when Charles II became king. A blacklist today generally means a list of things or people excluded from something. We might have called Charles II's list a "hit list" instead.
5. "The Black Death" refers to an epidemic that killed 30-60% of the European population. In which century did this happen?

Answer: 14th century

"The Black Death", "The Great Pestilence", "The Great Plague": the epidemic has several names. The disease didn't disappear after the main outbreak. It killed many more over the following centuries.
6. In chess, one player is "white" and one is "black". Why is black usually seen as having a slight disadvantage at the start of the game?

Answer: White always makes the first move

Various statistics databases show that white wins 52-57% of non-drawn games in tournament play. Some actually claim that this is a psychological effect on the players: white's advantage may stem from the belief that white has an advantage.
7. Which famous rock group, who also had sympathy for a very dark lord, sang "Paint It Black" in the 1960s?

Answer: The Rolling Stones

"Paint It Black" was first released in 1966 under the original title "Paint It, Black". The hint in the question refers to "Sympathy for the Devil" from 1968.
8. The UK athlete Roger Black won gold medals in World Championships and silver medals in the Olympics in the 1990s. In which sport?

Answer: Track and field (400 meters and relay)

Roger Black might have been better remembered today had it not been for the fact that his main adversary was the fantastic American athlete Michael Johnson who dominated the 200 meters as well as the 400 meters.
9. Black Body Radiation is a concept in physics that refers to the heat radiation emitted from any opaque and non-reflective body. What does the spectrum and intensity of this radiation depend on?

Answer: Temperature

A really hot black body can appear to have other colors: as the temperature increases, so does the black body radiation spectrum. The heat radiation therefore "spills over" into the more energy-rich visual parts of the electromagnetic spectrum. A cooler object does appear black.
10. Many languages lack specific words for many colors, but black/white (or dark/light) appears to be a universal human concept. Which of the following words mean black?

Answer: Kuro (Japanese)

Swedish being a Germanic language, just as English, may have made it possible to guess that "grön" means "green". "Krasnyy" is Russian for "red" and "amarelo" is Portuguese for "yellow".
