Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Golden Gate Bridge, an iconic landmark that links San Francisco to Marin County and San Raphael, is known worldwide for its beauty. Its appeal lies not only in the majestic design, but in its striking color. Although it seems that the bridge should be gold based on its name, the actual color is what?

Answer: International Orange

Under various lighting conditions the color appears to change from bright yellow-orange to deep scarlet. The bridge is continually maintained by a staff of over three dozen painters.
The name 'Golden Gate' actually refers to the opening of San Francisco Bay to the Pacific Ocean and has nothing to do with the color of the bridge.
2. Which one of the following seas does NOT exist?

Answer: Green

The Yellow Sea is west of Korea, the White Sea is in northwest Russia, and the Red Sea lies amidst Egypt, Sudan and Saudi Arabia. There's no 'Green Sea', but there is still one more color represented in the colored sea group -- the Black Sea.
3. Which of the following states in the USA does NOT have its name derived from a color?

Answer: Hawaii

Hawaii means "homeland" or possibly "place of the gods."
The others all have direct roots in colors.
Colorado is of Spanish origin and means red or reddish.
Vermont is a combination of "vert" and "mont" from the French meaning green and mountain, respectively.
Lastly, Rhode Island comes from the Dutch "roodt eylandt" meaning red island, in reference to the red clay on Aquidneck Island.
4. Each of the primary (red, yellow, blue) and secondary (orange, green, purple) colors have various hues and shades associated with them. For example green has emerald, forest, avocado, pea, etc. Which of the colors below does NOT fit with the others?

Answer: cornflower

Cornflower is blue, while the others are all in the purple family.
The scientific name for the cornflower is Centaurea cyanus and it is also called the Bluebottle or Cyani flower.
5. Asked to picture an apple in your mind, most people will conjure an image of a shiny red fruit. Although red is certainly the most common color for them, apples can also be green or yellow. Which apple cultivar listed below is NOT red?

Answer: Granny Smith

Maria Ann Smith is credited with planting the first seedling which went on to become named after her. The apples originated from Australia in the late 1860s and have become popular all over the world. Famously, the Beatles used a Granny Smith apple as the symbol for Apple Records.
6. Out of all the flags of the countries of the world, there was only one country whose flag was a single color from 1977 to 2011. It consisted of a solid green field with nothing else. The country has had other flags, but the monochromatic version was adopted in 1977. The country was previously an Italian colony. Which country is it?

Answer: Libya

Green is Libya's national color and it is the traditional color of Islam, the state religion of Libya.
Prior to 1977 the Libyan flag consisted predominately of red, white and black horizontal stripes. After Gaddafi was ousted, a striped flag was once again adopted.
7. I saw a picture of an actress the other day who was wearing a beautiful necklace. It had a large green gemstone that perfectly accented her green eyes. There are so many different gemstones that can be green, but I know it was *not* which one of the following?

Answer: Sardonyx

Sardonyx is a special type of onyx, which is itself a type of quartz. Sardonyx typically has bands of orange red or brownish red instead of the black associated with onyx. Interestingly, it is the amount of iron in both jade and peridot that affect the final shade of green, whereas in emerald it is the amount of chromium.
8. Lobsters are prized for their succulent meat all over the world. Most lobsters' colors are shades of greenish-brown with some red hues. After being cooked the lobster turns completely bright red. However, a prized mutation of the lobster occurs in an estimated 1 out of 2 million individuals, which are what color?

Answer: blue

A genetic protein defect causes the color change. A few other types of color mutations have been recorded including yellow and white. The odds for yellow is 1 in 30 million and for white it is an astounding 1 in 100 million.
9. Two favorite candied treats, M&Ms and Skittles were originally introduced to the market in only 5 colors. Comparing the two products we would see that 4 out of 5 of the original colors were the same (yellow, red, green and purple). What were the M&M and Skittles colors that were different?

Answer: brown and orange

The brown, yellow and green M&Ms have been the only ones produced continuously since 1941, when M&Ms were introduced. Purple was discontinued by the late 1940s (replaced by tan) and red was stopped temporarily in the 1970s due to a cancer scare.
Skittles didn't come onto the market until 1974 and Original Fruit Skittles have never changed colors. Skittles now come in over a dozen different product offerings including Double Sour, Tropical and Skittles Sensations.
10. Believe it or not, there is a state in the USA that has six different counties which include colors in their names. They are: Blackford, Brown, Greene, Orange, Vermillion and White Counties. This state's motto is "The Crossroads of America". Which state is it?

Answer: Indiana

Indiana is one of a handful of states that have an Orange County. Other states include California, Florida, Virginia and North Carolina. Although the county in Florida is named after the fruit, the others all are a tribute to William of Orange, who reigned as King William III over England and Ireland beginning in 1689.
