Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This colour is a favourite for baby clothes. It is light and airy, but when used as a noun, the word can also mean an item that does not come up to expectations or specifications. Which colour is this?

Answer: lemon

Of course the colour lemon comes from the citrus fruit of that name (or is it the other way about?). It is a light yellow, with just a hint of green. And I do hope you've never bought a lemon when you intended to buy a car or a washing machine?
2. This colour is used in many situations, but the one I am thinking of is inside a restaurant or a pub. A learned-looking man is holding a container to the light and saying; "Now this is a very nice -". What is the missing word?

Answer: burgundy

Burgundy is a dark, rich red colour with a hint of purple. It is also the name of a wine named after the French region of (guess what?) Burgundy. Burgundy's capital, Dijon, has given its name to a kind of mustard.
3. This colour is very popular, but it has given its name to a kind of music and also to a feeling of sadness and depression. So, what is it that you can play or have?

Answer: the blues

I do hope this quiz isn't giving you the blues? I think it's odd that such a delightful colour should make anyone think of sadness. To cure the blues, think of sky blue, sea blue, china blue...
4. This colour is favoured by some people, while others dislike it intensely. That's true of many, but this one seems to polarise people especially. It is the name of a flower, it can be used as a verb and also as a noun meaning health and well-being.

Answer: pink

That one was a bit tricky, since a violet is also a flower! However, it isn't used for feeling well and healthy. A pink is a kind of dianthus, a relative of the more famous carnation. To "pink" something can mean either to cut in a decorative zig-zag pattern with pinking shears or else to prick during a duel. And I hope you are feeling "in the pink"?
5. Here's a bright, cheerful colour that some people think is unlucky. It is also used in the plural form for a kind of food. As an adjective, it can mean young or inexperienced. The noun form is also used to denote an open area in a village. What is it?

Answer: green

It's pretty obvious that the colour green describes the greens we should eat and the village green where the lads and maidens dance. As for the green that means inexperienced, that seems to derive from the green of young leaves.
6. This colour is often considered royal. It can be used as a noun, almost always as part of a four word description which begins with the word "born". It has a poor reputation in the literary world. What is it?

Answer: purple

Crimson and gold are also considered royal colours, but purple takes the prize. After all, one can be "born to the purple". As for ermine, that's a kind of fur, and as far as I know it isn't used as a colour. Most literary people dislike the notion of "purple prose".
7. This is a pleasant but rather subdued colour. It has two different spellings, one used in the USA, the other in Britain and Australia. It is usually used as an adjective, but the noun form means a kind of alien. What is it?

Answer: grey

Traditionally, aliens are "little green men", but it is grey that is used as a noun. Perhaps blue is too, but blue is not a subdued colour.
8. A delightful colour, associated with personal adornment. When in association with the number thirty, it has connotations of betrayal.

Answer: silver

Silver is a metal as well as a colour, as are the other three choices. (Though bronze and brass are properly alloys.) However, it is thirty pieces of silver that is used to suggest betrayal. This harks back to the story of Jesus and Judas, and is mentioned in a poem by T.S. Elliot.
9. This pretty mix of blue and green is a favourite winter colour. In its noun form it is also a kind of bird. Which is the answer?

Answer: teal

A teal is a kind of duck. Navy and turquoise are also used as nouns, but in one case the connotation is a gemstone and in the other an official fleet of ships. And navy isn't a mix of blue and green.
10. It's a sad thing, but the delightful, bright colour yellow is used to represent cowardice. True or false?

Answer: True

Yes, it's true. If you describe a sportsperson or soldier as "yellow" he or she will probably be very angry with you... Sad, but true.
